November 3, 2026. New Zealand’s central bank has registered Revolut Bank New Zealand Limited as the country’s 27th bank, a regulatory milestone that could intensify competition for deposits and everyday banking. Registration is confirmed; whether it materially changes prices or market share remains an open question.

What the regulator actually approved

The Reserve Bank of New Zealand said Revolut has been registered to provide banking services after operating locally as a financial-services provider since July 2023. The registration falls under the Banking (Prudential Supervision) Act 1989. The regulator emphasized that applicants must meet prudential and statutory requirements. The decision is not itself evidence that existing banks have already lowered fees or improved rates.

The savings offer and its limits

Revolut says its New Zealand bank is launching instant-access savings accounts, including a variable introductory annual rate of 3.50% for the first four months for new retail customers. Introductory rates are not permanent: consumers should compare the rate after the promotional period, eligibility, deposit protection, and withdrawal terms rather than assuming the headline yield will last.

The company has also announced plans to invest NZ$120 million in New Zealand over five years. That is a forward-looking commitment, not money already invested or proof of future profitability.

Why competition matters

A new licensed entrant can make it easier for customers to compare deposit products and switch providers, but registration alone does not guarantee widespread adoption. Revolut must earn trust, demonstrate operational resilience, and sustain attractive economics beyond introductory offers. The immediate test is whether its product availability and post-promotion pricing persuade customers to move meaningful balances.
