UK Unveils £100 Million AI Biosecurity Lab, With OpenAI and Anthropic Pledging Model Support

LONDON, October 24, 2026 — Britain has announced a new AI Biosecurity Lab intended to help detect emerging biological threats and accelerate work on vaccines and treatments, as the government rolls out a wider investment package aimed at artificial-intelligence security.
The laboratory will receive £100 million in government funding and up to £200 million in support from OpenAI and Anthropic, according to a Cabinet Office announcement published Saturday. Crucially, the companies’ contributions are commitments involving computing, model credits, access and technical support—not an additional £200 million in cash.
The new organization will focus initially on earlier identification of biological threats and faster development of medical countermeasures. It is designed to operate independently as a nonprofit, with collaborations involving UK public-health and research agencies.
What the technology companies are contributing
The government said OpenAI would provide £100 million in compute and model credits and access through its Rosalind Biodefense programme. Anthropic pledged up to £100 million in model credits, model access and specialist support. Google DeepMind and Basecamp Research are also expected to collaborate on research and scientific tools.
Reuters reported that the laboratory forms part of a broader package of roughly £600 million directed at AI safety, cybersecurity and related capabilities. The measures include additional resources for the existing AI Security Institute and projects to strengthen cyber defences.
Why it matters
AI tools may help scientists identify biological threats and design medical responses more quickly, but the same advances have also intensified concerns about misuse. The new lab is a planned response to those competing opportunities and risks; its impact on outbreak preparedness has yet to be demonstrated.
