SEC Puts AI, Private Credit and Tokenized Securities in 2027 Wall Street Exam Spotlight

WASHINGTON, Oct. 23, 2026 — U.S. securities regulators are putting artificial intelligence, private credit and tokenized securities under closer scrutiny in their next round of Wall Street examinations, as fast-changing products and technology create new questions for investor protection.
The Securities and Exchange Commission released its fiscal 2027 examination priorities on Friday. The agency said its inspectors will review risks across investment advisers, broker-dealers, funds and other regulated firms, with particular attention to conflicts of interest, complex investments and compliance controls.
Private credit and AI under the microscope
Private funds and private credit feature prominently in the plan. These investments can be difficult to value or sell quickly, making disclosure, liquidity and investor suitability important questions. Reuters reported that the priorities come as policymakers seek to widen access to private assets for ordinary and retirement investors.
The SEC also identified advanced technology as a focus, including its effects on trading, regulatory compliance, fraud prevention and investor protection. Examiners will assess risks tied to changes in market infrastructure, including the tokenization of securities, as well as cybersecurity and safeguards for customer information.
What the announcement means
The priorities guide where SEC examiners will concentrate their work; they do not themselves create new regulations or establish that any particular firm has violated the law. The agency said the list is not exhaustive and may change as risks develop.
For investors, the announcement highlights an increasingly important question: whether financial firms can explain and manage the risks of products and technologies that are becoming more complex.
