ST. PETERSBURG, Florida — October 28, 2026. The Tampa Bay Rays survived a potential World Series sweep with a 4–3 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers in 12 innings on Tuesday night, October 27. Pinch-hitter Ben Williamson delivered the decisive single in the bottom of the 12th, turning a Milwaukee lead into a Tampa Bay walk-off victory and sending the best-of-seven series to Game 5.

How a championship celebration became a comeback

Milwaukee entered Game 4 leading the series 3–0. After the teams reached extra innings tied at 2–2, Brewers hitter Cooper Pratt launched a solo home run in the top of the 12th to put his team ahead 3–2. At that moment, Milwaukee was three outs away from the first World Series championship in franchise history.

Instead, Tampa Bay answered in the bottom half. An error by Brewers third baseman Joey Ortiz allowed Junior Caminero to reach base. Liam Hicks then singled. Jonny DeLuca drove home pinch-runner Cedric Mullins with a single to center, leveling the score at 3–3. Chandler Simpson’s hit loaded the bases, and Williamson’s grounder past first baseman Jake Bauers into right field brought home the winning run.

That sequence matters because it was not a single towering home run that changed the outcome. The Rays assembled pressure through an error, consecutive hits and a pinch-hitter who seized the decisive opportunity. Milwaukee’s bullpen and defense could not close out the final inning after Pratt’s dramatic go-ahead homer.

What the result changes — and what it does not

The Rays have avoided elimination, but Milwaukee still holds a commanding 3–1 series lead. The Brewers need one more victory to win the championship; Tampa Bay must win three straight games to complete the comeback. Game 5 is scheduled for Wednesday, October 28, at Tropicana Field.

Overcoming a 3–0 deficit in a best-of-seven Major League Baseball postseason series remains extraordinarily rare. The 2004 Boston Red Sox, who came back against the New York Yankees in the American League Championship Series, are the only team to have completed that feat. Tampa Bay’s Game 4 win extends its season; it does not yet put the Rays close to matching that historic comeback.

The turning points

The 12th inning contained both teams’ defining moments: Pratt’s go-ahead homer for Milwaukee, DeLuca’s tying single for Tampa Bay, and Williamson’s game-winning hit. The result also gives the Rays a chance to play another home game rather than watching Milwaukee celebrate at Tropicana Field.

For Milwaukee, the immediate question is whether it can reset after being one inning away from a sweep. For Tampa Bay, the challenge is to convert one dramatic escape into a sustained series comeback. Neither possibility should be confused with a confirmed future outcome.
