Nairobi 12-Storey Building Collapses in Eastleigh as Rescuers Search Rubble

· News Team

NAIROBI, Kenya — October 23, 2026. A 12-storey building under construction collapsed on Friday in Nairobi’s densely populated Eastleigh district, prompting an emergency response as authorities investigated reports that people could be trapped beneath the debris.

The office of Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja said the building’s ground floor was occupied, but officials had not established how many people were inside when the structure fell. The cause of the collapse was not immediately known, according to Reuters, whose journalists documented rescue personnel and excavation equipment at the site.

The Associated Press reported that the collapse occurred on a busy commercial street and that police sought to clear crowds so emergency crews could work. The Kenya Red Cross said its Nairobi responders were dispatched and urged the public to leave access routes open.

As of the initial reports on Friday afternoon, authorities had not confirmed a death toll, an injury count or the number of people trapped. Claims about casualties should therefore be treated as unverified until emergency officials release an update.
