DORTMUND, Germany — October 24, 2026. Borussia Dortmund moved provisionally to the top of the Bundesliga on Saturday with a 1–0 home win over Eintracht Frankfurt, settled by an 80th-minute strike from substitute Maximilian Beier. The result is final, not a live score. Bayern Munich can reclaim first place when they visit Freiburg on Sunday.

The substitutes changed the game

After an absorbing but goalless first half, Dortmund coach Niko Kovač sent on Beier, Carney Chukwuemeka and Ethan Nwaneri in the 68th minute. Ten minutes later, Jobe Bellingham joined them. The decisive move came when Bellingham collected the ball on the right and cut it back for Beier, who bent a right-footed finish into the far corner. The Bundesliga’s official match centre credits Bellingham with the assist and records the goal in the 80th minute.

It was not a routine victory. Frankfurt goalkeeper Noah Atubolu frustrated Dortmund earlier, while Serhou Guirassy struck the crossbar with a second-half header. Frankfurt also had opportunities, including Farès Chaïbi’s effort that Gregor Kobel tipped away shortly after the interval. Dortmund’s stronger second-half pressure eventually told.

Why this narrow win matters

Beier’s intervention ended Dortmund’s two-match run of Bundesliga draws and took the club to 17 points from seven matches, three ahead of Bayern before the defending champions’ Sunday fixture. This is a provisional lead, not a settled change of championship favorite. The significance lies in how Dortmund found a winning solution after struggling to turn territory into clear chances.

Kovač’s bench decisions also provide a useful tactical lesson: Beier offered a fresh finishing threat, while Bellingham’s late movement and delivery created the opening. The combination came after Frankfurt had largely survived Dortmund’s earlier attacks. One precise sequence changed the points distribution and the weekend’s title-race conversation.

Next weekend’s Bayern–Dortmund meeting adds weight to the result, but the table could change before then. For Frankfurt, an organized defensive display brought no points, underscoring the cost of leaving even one dangerous shooting lane open.
