November 1, 2026 — Mexico City. Kimi Antonelli has become Formula 1’s youngest drivers’ world champion at age 20 after finishing third in the Mexico City Grand Prix. The Mercedes driver did not need to win the race: third place put the championship beyond the reach of his rivals, even as Max Verstappen took the chequered flag for Red Bull.

Formula 1’s published race classification, marked provisional at this update, places Verstappen first after 71 laps in 2:20:28.772, Lewis Hamilton second for Ferrari just 0.799 seconds behind, and Antonelli third, 4.006 seconds behind the winner. Charles Leclerc was fourth and Lando Norris fifth. The distinction matters: the finishing order is now published by the competition organizer, but any later stewards’ amendments should be reflected in the record.

A title won by consistency, not the final-lap gamble

Antonelli arrived in Mexico with a commanding championship lead. Formula 1’s pre-race calculation was clear: ninth place or better would guarantee him the title, regardless of what anyone else achieved. He started fourth on the official grid and finished on the podium, comfortably exceeding that requirement. At 20, he surpasses the age benchmark previously set by Sebastian Vettel, according to contemporary race reporting.

The championship result and race victory tell two different stories. Verstappen recovered from fifth on the grid to win, while Hamilton converted his first Ferrari pole position into second place. Antonelli’s third place underlined the strength of his season rather than a single spectacular finish. A season-long points lead, built before Mexico, left him able to prioritize a clean result over a risky pursuit of the race win.

Why the Mexican Grand Prix was so unsettled

The contest included a Ferrari dispute and multiple interruptions. Independent specialist outlet The Race reports that Leclerc received a five-second penalty after an early off-track incident and that a red flag followed Valtteri Bottas’s crash. The interruptions reset the fight at the front, and a later safety-car period created another chance for Hamilton to challenge Verstappen. Verstappen held on; Antonelli finished third after the reshuffled battle.

For Mercedes, the immediate significance is a drivers’ crown secured with races still to run. For the rest of the grid, Mexico showed that race wins remain contested even after the title is decided. The next challenge is to establish whether the new champion can sustain that level across changing technical regulations and another season of pressure.
