SK hynix Weighs New Shareholder Payout as $12 Billion Dividend Report Emerges
· News Team
SEOUL, October 26, 2026 — South Korean memory-chip maker SK hynix says it is reviewing additional ways to return cash to shareholders and expects to disclose details alongside its third-quarter results on Wednesday, October 28. The statement follows a local-media report suggesting a special dividend of roughly 16 trillion won (about $12 billion), but the company has not approved or announced that dividend amount.
The distinction matters: a proposed payout would be a significant capital-allocation decision for one of the companies supplying the memory chips used in artificial-intelligence infrastructure. For now, the reported figure is a possibility, not an established commitment.
What is confirmed — and what remains unconfirmed
Reuters reported on October 26 that SK hynix plans to outline shareholder-return measures on Wednesday. The report cited South Korea’s Dong-A Ilbo on a potential 16 trillion won special dividend, possibly linked to gains on the company’s investment in Japanese chipmaker Kioxia. SK hynix said it was considering various options but did not confirm a size, funding mechanism or final board decision.
There is firmer evidence for an earlier, separate initiative. In an August 19 corporate announcement, SK hynix said its board approved a 40 trillion won share-repurchase-and-cancellation program and raised its shareholder-return ambition to more than half of cumulative free cash flow generated over 2025–2027. That previously approved buyback should not be confused with the newly reported dividend.
Why AI investors are watching
SK hynix supplies dynamic random-access memory and flash storage, including high-bandwidth memory used in AI computing systems. Demand for AI infrastructure has supported the memory industry, but investors are increasingly asking how chipmakers will balance factory expansion, research spending and shareholder distributions.
A dividend returns cash directly to shareholders; repurchasing and cancelling shares can reduce the number of outstanding shares. Neither automatically demonstrates that a company’s shares are undervalued, and both must be weighed against future capital needs. The potential payout therefore matters as much for what it says about management’s confidence in cash generation as for its headline size.

What to watch on October 28
The company’s official investor-relations notice schedules a third-quarter earnings release before 9:00 a.m. Seoul time on Wednesday, October 28, followed by a Korean-English interpreted conference call at 9:00 a.m. Seoul time (1:00 a.m. Central European Time, CET). The next checks are the board-approved payout amount, any dividend record date, the relationship to Kioxia holdings and the effect on capital investment plans.
