**Updated October 28, 2026, 21:05 UTC.** Flights at Yemen’s Aden International Airport
were halted after an attack on Wednesday, according to two transport ministry officials
cited by Reuters. The interruption raises a concern larger than a single cancelled
journey: Aden is a vital route for humanitarian staff and medical supplies entering
southern Yemen.

Yemeni government forces blamed the Houthi movement for the strike and reported
civilian injuries and damage, Reuters said. The number and severity of injuries
had not been independently established at this reporting cutoff. The International
Organization for Migration said its personnel travelling through Aden were accounted
for and safe; that assurance should not be confused with a claim that nobody else
was injured.

## What happened at the airport?

The Houthis issued an evacuation warning before the reported attack. Their military
spokesperson, Yahya Saree, alleged that a Saudi military cargo plane carrying weapons
was at the airport. That allegation has not been independently verified, and Reuters
reported no immediate Saudi response.

Yemen’s transport ministry subsequently said the airport had been targeted twice
within hours and alleged six attacks over the preceding six days, according to Anadolu
Agency’s reporting of the ministry’s written statement. These are _government claims_,
not independently confirmed strike totals. Reuters separately reported that residents
heard explosions near the airport and that flights were halted.

## Why the humanitarian consequences matter

For passengers, a sudden interruption can mean cancelled connections and uncertain
onward travel. For relief organisations, the risk is more acute: a flight that cannot
safely land or depart can delay staff rotations, medical equipment and emergency
support. The duration of Wednesday’s shutdown and a verified reopening time were
not available at publication. Travellers should check directly with their airline
and airport authorities rather than rely on earlier schedules.

The danger predates Wednesday’s incident. In an [October 26 field update](https://www.msf.org/strikes-are-impacting-access-healthcare-yemen),
Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders) said a missile had landed near
Aden airport days earlier while one of its aircraft was preparing to depart. Staff
were directed to take shelter and the plane stayed on the ground. The group also
reported a strike close to Mocha General Hospital, illustrating how fighting can
restrict access to care even without a direct hit on a hospital.

The [medical charity’s October 8 assessment](https://www.msf.org/five-things-know-about-situation-south-yemen-today)
described mass displacement and already overstretched health services in southern
Yemen. Repeated disruptions at a key transport gateway therefore have effects beyond
aviation: they make an existing humanitarian emergency harder to manage.

## What remains unconfirmed?

Officials and parties to the conflict offer competing explanations for military
activity around the airport. The Houthis’ account of an alleged weapons delivery
remains uncorroborated. No independently verified final casualty count, full damage
assessment or definitive resumption schedule for airport operations was available
at the time of writing. Those details require fresh confirmation before being reported
as settled fact.

The wider escalation follows renewed clashes between the Houthis and the Saudi-backed
Yemeni government. It also adds pressure to Red Sea transport routes as regional
hostilities continue. The immediate editorial priority is to track civilian safety,
actual flight operations and humanitarian access—not to amplify unverified battlefield
claims.
