**WOLFSBURG, Germany — October 29, 2026.** Volkswagen Group reported a **€5.86 billion
operating loss** for the July–September quarter, compared with a €1.30 billion loss
a year earlier. Its newly released financial tables show third-quarter revenue of**
€75.28 billion**, down 6.3% from €80.31 billion. The result is severe, but understanding
it requires separating non-cash accounting charges from the company’s underlying
ability to earn and generate cash.

## What actually drove the quarterly loss?

Volkswagen said **€7.8 billion in special items** hit the third quarter. Across
the first nine months, the total reached €8.7 billion. A central component was a**
€6.4 billion non-cash impairment of Porsche goodwill**, alongside approximately
€1 billion in impairments relating to Chinese operations and additional costs connected
with the planned sale of the Osnabrück business.

A goodwill impairment reduces reported profit because management has reassessed
the expected value of an acquired business. It is not equivalent to €6.4 billion
leaving the company’s bank account during the quarter. That distinction does not
make the charge harmless: the revised valuation signals that earlier expectations
for future profitability have weakened.

Volkswagen’s third-quarter loss after tax was **€5.82 billion**. That is a different
accounting measure from the €5.86 billion operating loss, and the two should not
be conflated. Similarly, the €80.31 billion revenue figure in the company table
is the _prior-year_ comparison, not 2026 quarterly sales.

## Even before one-offs, the margin problem remains

Removing special items paints a less catastrophic picture, but not a comfortable
one. Volkswagen reported **€8.8 billion in nine-month operating profit before special
items**, equal to an adjusted operating margin of **3.8%**. Management said that
level is insufficient for the scale of investment the company needs.

The pressures are structural as well as accounting-related: weaker demand and pricing
in China, US tariffs, intense competition in Europe and a growing share of lower-
margin electric vehicles. Global customer deliveries fell **14.3% in the third quarter**
to 1.885 million vehicles. Volkswagen’s European electric-vehicle order bank is
a relative bright spot, but a rising EV order mix is not yet the same thing as higher
EV profitability.

## Cash flow provides a second, more nuanced picture

Volkswagen’s automotive division generated **€4.39 billion of net cash flow over
the first nine months**, up from €1.80 billion in the comparable 2025 period, according
to the company. However, third-quarter automotive net cash flow fell to **€1.23
billion** from €3.15 billion a year earlier. Both periods matter: the nine-month
improvement should not conceal the latest quarter’s weaker conversion of activity
into cash.

For the full year, Volkswagen continues to project approximately **€315 billion
in revenue**, an operating margin of **up to 1%**, and automotive net cash flow
of **€3 billion to €6 billion**. Those are company forecasts, not achieved outcomes.

## The next test: restructuring execution, not just accounting recovery

Investors and workers will be watching whether Volkswagen can restore margins while
simplifying its model lineup, adjusting manufacturing capacity and developing more
competitive products for China and other markets. A rebound in reported earnings
after large one-time charges would not, on its own, prove the underlying business
has recovered. Sustained adjusted margins, competitive delivery trends and cash
generation will be more informative.
