# Ukraine Says 26 Killed at Aid Hub and Shelter in Komyshuvakha — What Is Known

**Updated November 2, 2026.** Ukrainian authorities say Russian air attacks on a
school compound used for humanitarian aid distribution and shelter in Komyshuvakha,
in the southeastern Zaporizhzhia region, killed 26 people. Rescue operations were
continuing as officials reported people missing. The toll is attributed to Ukrainian
emergency services and has not been independently established by Tectonics.

## What happened at the aid site?

According to [Reuters’ November 2 report](https://www.reuters.com/world/ukraines-zelenskiy-russian-bombing-kills-18-southeastern-zaporizhzhia-region-2026-11-02/),
the building was no longer being used for classes because the community is close
to the front line. Instead, residents received humanitarian packages there on Mondays
and used part of the site for shelter. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said aircraft
first struck the school area and that additional bombs then hit the shelter. The
exact sequence and intent are based on Ukrainian officials’ accounts; Tectonics 
has not independently reconstructed the strike.

Emergency services said the dead included two rescue workers and four police officers.
Reuters reported five people receiving hospital treatment and cited Zaporizhzhia

separately reported the 26-death toll and described further danger to rescuers from
drone attacks. These figures may change as crews search the site.

## Why the location matters

A school that doubles as an aid collection point is more than a building: for residents
who have stayed near the front, it may be a regular route to food, basic supplies
and shelter. A strike there can interrupt distribution, deter people from gathering
and expose emergency workers to additional danger. Those consequences matter regardless
of whether the eventual casualty count rises.

The reported attack came as a limited humanitarian ceasefire in the separate Kherson
region expired. That arrangement was intended to support aid and evacuations around
Oleshky. It did _not_ constitute a general ceasefire across Ukraine, and its expiration
does not explain or justify attacks on civilians or civilian facilities.

## What remains unconfirmed

Independent investigators have not yet publicly established every munition used,
the full number of victims, or whether the location was intentionally targeted for
its humanitarian role. Zelenskyy accused Russia of deliberately attacking people
collecting aid; that is an allegation requiring independent assessment. Civilian
protection and the prohibition of attacks directed at civilians remain central principles
of international humanitarian law.

Further reporting should prioritize updated casualty records, eyewitness accounts,
independently geolocated imagery and any response from Russian authorities. The 
public should not mistake photographs from other places or dates for documentation
of this incident.
