# UAE Oil Spill Prompts Ras Al Khaimah Beach Closures as Coastal Cleanup Widens

**October 24, 2026 — UNITED ARAB EMIRATES.** Ras Al Khaimah has closed its public
beaches until further notice, extending precautionary coastal restrictions in the
northern United Arab Emirates after an offshore tanker oil spill. The emirate’s 
Public Services Department announced the closure on Saturday in a notice shared 
by Ras Al Khaimah Police. The notice did not specify the reason for the latest closure.

The decision follows Friday’s temporary closure of beaches and coastal areas in 
neighbouring Umm Al Quwain, where the UAE’s Ministry of Climate Change and Environment
said monitoring systems had detected oil pollution linked to a tanker. Authorities
in Sharjah also closed Al Hamriyah Beach as a precaution.

Environmental teams are assessing affected waters and shorelines, containing pollution
and conducting cleanup operations. The ministry urged fishermen and other sea users
to avoid affected areas and follow official instructions. It said unusual odours
reported in Sharjah, Ajman and Umm Al Quwain did not pose a health risk to residents.

**What remains unknown:** UAE authorities have not publicly identified the tanker
or established the cause of the spill. The full extent of contamination, the timetable
for reopening beaches and any longer-term effects on marine ecosystems have not 
been confirmed. The wider Gulf has faced heightened maritime-security risks during
the regional conflict, but officials have not established a cause for this particular
leak.

Ras Al Khaimah authorities said reopening would be announced when conditions allow.
Residents and visitors should consult local government notices before travelling
to affected beaches.
