**October 29, 2026 —** STMicroelectronics has raised its 2026 data-center revenue
outlook to approximately **$1.3 billion**, compared with a July forecast of more
than $1 billion, as demand for chips used in artificial-intelligence infrastructure
strengthens. The revised figure is a _company forecast for the full year_, not revenue
booked in the third quarter, and it should not be confused with ST’s total company
sales.

What makes the update significant is not simply another semiconductor company benefiting
from AI spending. According to [Reuters’ October 29 earnings coverage](https://www.reuters.com/business/retail-consumer/stmicro-beats-q3-profit-estimates-sees-q4-sales-above-4-billion-2026-10-29/),
Chief Executive Jean-Marc Chery highlighted silicon photonics as a central driver
of data-center demand. These technologies use light to transmit information across
high-speed connections, an increasingly important engineering challenge as computing
systems become larger and more interconnected.

## What the earnings numbers actually show

In its [official third-quarter release](https://newsroom.st.com/media-center/press-item.html/stmicroelectronics-reports-q3-2026-financial-results.html),
ST reported $3.76 billion in group revenue for the quarter ended September 26, up
17.9% from a year earlier. Gross margin reached 37.3%, compared with 33.2% a year
earlier. Operating income under U.S. GAAP was $367 million; an adjusted, non-U.S.-
GAAP measure was $429 million. Those are different accounting measures, not interchangeable
descriptions of profit.

The company forecast fourth-quarter group revenue of about $4.15 billion, plus or
minus 3.5%, and a gross margin of roughly 39% at the midpoint. That guidance is
forward-looking. ST also reiterated a target for data-center revenue _well above
$2 billion in 2027_, according to Reuters. Neither target is a guaranteed outcome.

## Why optical connections are attracting investment

AI accelerators do not operate in isolation. Large clusters must constantly move
data between processors, memory and networking equipment. As clusters expand, the
energy, heat and bandwidth demands of electrical connections can become constraints.
Silicon photonics aims to address part of that problem by using optical signals
for high-speed links. It does not eliminate all electrical components, nor does
a strong outlook for one supplier establish that the entire AI infrastructure market
is profitable.

ST makes semiconductors for many markets, including automotive, industrial and consumer
electronics. The latest results therefore reflect both a recovery across established
end markets and growth in selected newer applications. The company’s earnings statement
also identifies low-Earth-orbit satellite communications as a contributor. That
broader mix matters: attributing all of ST’s improvement to generative AI would
overstate the evidence.

## The risks behind the forecast

Supply is another part of the story. ST said it was expanding capacity in response
to demand that remains above available supply. Reuters reported that management
is planning materials and equipment requirements several years ahead and increasing
prices on selected products. Such investment can support growth, but it also exposes
the business to demand shifts, production bottlenecks and execution costs.

Reuters reported that Chery described demand as concentrated among major hyperscale
cloud operators rather than smaller ‘neo-cloud’ providers. That customer mix may
offer visibility into large deployments, but concentration creates its own risk
if a small number of buyers revise capital-expenditure plans. Investors should also
watch whether improving gross margins persist once capacity expands and component
costs change.

## What to watch next

The most informative tests are whether ST meets its fourth-quarter revenue and margin
guidance, how much of its data-center target converts into recognized sales, and
whether optical networking orders remain strong into 2027. A forecast revision signals
confidence; it is not proof that future demand, pricing or margins will develop
exactly as expected.
