**Latest update — 29 October 2026, 11:00 UTC:** The death toll has risen to at least
69, according to [Reuters](https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/spanish-rescuers-search-trains-hope-finding-survivors-deadly-crash-2026-10-29/)
and [Associated Press](https://apnews.com/article/aeb1c22ee6ddfe3733f3371bbf39ed0e).
Rescue crews continue searching the wreckage, and Spain has declared three days
of national mourning. The earlier 68-death figure below is superseded.

**Earlier report — 28 October 2026, 15:45 UTC.** The regional government raised
the confirmed toll to at least 68, as independently reported by [Reuters](https://www.reuters.com/world/two-high-speed-trains-rear-end-spain-rail-operator-says-2026-10-28/)
and [Associated Press](https://www.itv.com/news/2026-10-28/at-least-68-dead-in-high-speed-train-crash-in-central-spain);
the count may rise as rescue teams continue their search. At least **68 people have
died** after two high-speed passenger trains collided near Urda in central Spain
on Wednesday morning, according to a [corrected Reuters report issued at 14:25 Central European Time](https://www.boursorama.com/actualite-economique/actualites/nouvelle-catastrophe-ferroviaire-en-espagne-le-bilan-s-alourdit-a-64-morts-5f599ec1b6ebd8bbc4da9e7943aaeafa).
The casualty count is provisional as rescue crews continue working. An earlier Reuters
dispatch contained an erroneous toll of 67 that was corrected to 64; the later increase
to 68 is a separate update confirmed by the regional government and reported by
Reuters and AP.

## What happened on the Madrid–Andalusia corridor?

The collision occurred near Urda and Los Yébenes in Toledo province, on the high-
speed railway linking Madrid with southern Spain. A Renfe AVE train struck the rear
of an Iryo service that had stopped on the line, according to initial accounts cited
by regional authorities and news agencies. Two carriages derailed. Spain’s transport
minister Óscar Puente said the Renfe train had been authorised to restart despite
an active stop signal after a computer communications failure, calling the restart
decision erroneous. The ministry’s account is a significant new detail, but a final
independent investigation has not established the full sequence or responsibility.

Regional officials said the Renfe service carried 397 passengers and the Iryo service
147, a combined 544 people. Emergency responders deployed ambulances, helicopters,
firefighters and a military emergency unit. Injured passengers were taken to hospitals,
while unaffected travellers were moved away from the scene. [Associated Press reporting](https://www.itv.com/news/2026-10-28/at-least-64-dead-in-high-speed-train-crash-in-central-spain)
independently described the scale of the emergency and the rising death toll.

## Travel disruption and help for families

Infrastructure operator Adif suspended high-speed services between Madrid and Andalusia.
Renfe activated its victim-assistance plan and gave affected passengers and relatives
the number **900 10 10 20**; Iryo published **900 001 403**. The [Castilla-La Mancha government](https://www.castillalamancha.es/actualidad/notasdeprensa/el-gobierno-regional-eleva-el-platecam-fase-de-emergencia-situacion-operativa-2-para-la-provincia-de)
provided **900 122 112** for people seeking information. The operator statements
were also [reported by Europa Press](https://www.europapress.es/economia/transportes-00343/noticia-accidente-trenes-toledo-dicen-renfe-iryo-adif-20261028125430.html).
Travellers should check official service notices rather than assume a reopening
time.

## What remains unproven?

The collision, loss of life and the transport minister’s account of a restart authorised
despite a stop signal are documented, but the full technical sequence, responsibility
and any contribution from maintenance have not been established in a final investigation.
It would be premature to blame human error or railway privatization without evidence.
The crash follows another deadly high-speed rail collision in southern Spain in
January 2026, increasing scrutiny of rail safety; the two incidents should not be
assumed to share a cause.

early casualty count is outdated; the corrected Reuters figure above is newer.
