**November 1, 2026 —** A reported hijacking off Somalia’s northeastern coast has
prompted maritime-security authorities to warn commercial vessels that an Iranian
fishing boat could be used to support further piracy attacks. The warning concerns
the _Azini_, whose crew’s safety has not been established publicly.

The [Maritime Security Centre Indian Ocean (MSCIO)](https://mscio.eu/alerts/197)
said armed pirates reportedly seized the vessel at approximately 09:00 UTC on **
October 29**. In an alert updated October 31, the center said the boat’s latest
reported position was approaching a maritime traffic lane. The alert does not provide
a timestamp for that updated position, so it should **not** be treated as a live
tracking fix.

## What authorities have confirmed — and what remains unclear

MSCIO’s Alert 161/26 identifies the boat and reported hijacking, says crew welfare
is unknown and confirms that the European Union’s naval [Operation Atalanta](https://mscio.eu/eunavfor-operations/eunavfor-atalanta/)
is investigating. It warns that pirates _could potentially_ use the boat as a “mothership,”
a vessel from which smaller craft could stage attacks farther from shore. That is
a risk assessment, **not evidence that any subsequent attack has occurred**.

[The Associated Press reported on November 1](https://apnews.com/article/dd4d404235781a3b871668c353540e4c)
that a Puntland maritime police officer, speaking without authorization to be named,
said the boat carried 21 Iranian crew members and two Somali security guards and
was taken by 12 pirates. Those details are attributed to that officer; the public
MSCIO alert does not independently publish a crew count or identify the attackers.

MSCIO’s initial position report placed _Azini_ at 09°42′N, 53°55′E at 04:00 UTC
on October 30. A later update listed 09°47′N, 55°45′E, near the maritime traffic
lane. Neither point establishes where the vessel is now, whether its course has
changed or whether any rescue operation has begun.

## Why a fishing boat matters to international shipping

Hijacking a fishing vessel is not the same as attacking a merchant ship, but it
can expand the reach of pirate groups. A larger vessel may provide fuel, provisions
and a platform for smaller boats to operate farther offshore. That possibility helps
explain why the warning extends beyond the immediate fishing fleet to commercial
traffic transiting the western Indian Ocean.

The latest alert arrives against a wider background of renewed maritime insecurity.
AP reports that pirates have seized several commercial vessels this year after years
in which international patrols and shipboard defenses had sharply reduced attacks.
At the same time, separate threats around the Red Sea and Strait of Hormuz are complicating
route planning. These are distinct security problems; there is no public evidence
linking the _Azini_ hijacking to those other incidents.

## What shipping operators are being asked to do

MSCIO advises vessels in the area to maintain heightened vigilance, follow industry
[Best Management Practices for Maritime Security](https://mscio.eu/bmp/) and report
suspicious activity promptly. The notice does not announce a confirmed attack on
a cargo ship by _Azini_, nor does it establish that the fishing vessel is still
approaching the lane.

For ship operators, the practical issue is uncertainty: a reported hijacking with
unknown crew welfare, an incomplete vessel track and a warning of possible further
attacks. For the crew and their families, the immediate question is whether everyone
aboard is safe. Authorities have not publicly answered that question as of this
report.
