**October 29, 2026 —** Shell has announced a $5 billion share repurchase programme
after adjusted earnings for the third quarter reached $10.814 billion, almost twice
the $5.432 billion recorded a year earlier. The headline profit increase is striking,
but the underlying numbers tell a more complicated story about exceptional refining
conditions, cash generation and capital allocation.

## What the earnings actually show

In its [official unaudited quarterly results](https://shell.gcs-web.com/news-releases/news-release-details/shell-plc-3rd-quarter-2026-and-nine-months-unaudited-results),
Shell reported $12.057 billion in income attributable to shareholders and $10.814
billion in _adjusted earnings_. Those are different measures: adjusted earnings
exclude certain identified items, so the $10.8 billion figure should not be confused
with statutory net income.

Adjusted earnings increased from $9.836 billion in the second quarter and $5.432
billion in the third quarter of 2025. The Chemicals & Products division contributed
$3.855 billion in adjusted earnings, compared with $550 million a year earlier,
making it a major driver of the improvement. The company benefited from unusually
strong refining margins as global fuel markets adjusted to supply disruptions.

## Why a record refining environment matters

Shell’s global indicative refining margin reached $42 per barrel in the third quarter,
up from $24 in the preceding quarter, according to its results material. Refining
margins represent the economic spread between crude inputs and refined products;
they are not the same as profit earned on every barrel. When refineries are disrupted
or fuel supplies are tight, that spread can widen sharply. It can also reverse as
supply recovers.

[Reuters reported](https://www.reuters.com/business/energy/shell-beats-expectations-with-108-billion-third-quarter-profit-2026-10-29/)
that Middle East conflict-related interruptions helped lift energy prices and refining
profitability, even as Shell’s own production faced disruptions. This combination
illustrates why an energy producer can report exceptionally strong earnings during
a period of operational strain.

## The cash-flow test behind the $5 billion buyback

Shell reported $21.043 billion in cash flow from operating activities and $16.322
billion in free cash flow for the quarter. Both are substantial, but free cash flow
was below the $17.524 billion reported in the preceding quarter. Cash capital expenditure
rose to $7.922 billion from $4.237 billion in Q2. These sequential changes matter
when assessing how much of the profit surge translates into cash available for shareholders
and future investment.

The company has [announced a new $5 billion share buyback programme](https://shell.gcs-web.com/news-releases/news-release-details/shell-announces-commencement-share-buyback-programme-17),
up from $3 billion of new repurchases announced alongside the previous quarter’s
results. The programme is intended to run for roughly three months and is subject
to market conditions; the announcement is not evidence that all $5 billion has already
been spent. Repurchased shares are to be cancelled, reducing the share count.

## What investors should watch next

The central question is how durable this profitability will be if refining margins
normalize. Shell’s balance sheet remains a useful counterweight: it reported net
debt of $39.733 billion, down from $41.754 billion at the end of the second quarter,
while its reported gearing ratio was 16.6%. The group also said its 2026 cash-capital-
expenditure outlook, including the ARC acquisition, is $23 billion–$25 billion.

For households and businesses, the broader context is less celebratory. Elevated
fuel and gas prices can boost producer margins while increasing costs across transport,
heating and industrial supply chains. Strong corporate earnings do not by themselves
imply that the energy market is healthy for consumers.

**Bottom line:** Shell’s third-quarter result demonstrates the financial power of
an integrated energy business during disrupted markets. But the investment story
depends on whether operational improvements and cash discipline can persist after
the exceptional commodity-price and refining conditions fade.
