**RIYADH, Oct. 24, 2026 —** Saudi-led coalition forces say they intercepted and
destroyed two ballistic missiles fired by Yemen’s Houthi movement toward Taif and
the Red Sea port city of Yanbu on Saturday, the latest escalation in renewed cross-
border fighting.

Saudi civil defense authorities issued brief warnings of possible danger in Taif,
Yanbu, Mecca and Jeddah, then announced an all-clear roughly ten minutes later,
according to [Reuters’ October 24 report](https://www.reuters.com/world/middle-east/saudi-civil-defense-says-danger-passed-after-brief-alerts-mecca-jeddah-taif-2026-10-24/).
There was no immediate independently verified assessment of damage from Saturday’s
interceptions.

## Why the Red Sea port matters

Yanbu is a strategically important outlet for Saudi oil exports on the Red Sea.
The reported interception adds to security concerns around regional energy infrastructure
and aviation as attacks and counterattacks continue.

Two days earlier, the Houthis claimed attacks on Saudi defense and energy facilities,
including sites in Riyadh and Yanbu. Saudi authorities had not confirmed those particular
claims as of Reuters’ Saturday report. Saudi officials separately reported two deaths
after an attack at King Fahd International Airport in Dammam. The distinction between
confirmed incidents and the group’s unverified claims remains important.

The Saudi Press Agency had reported [a coalition missile interception near Najran on October 22](https://www.spa.gov.sa/en/N2708138)
and [two drone interceptions in the southern region on October 23](https://www.spa.gov.sa/en/N2708274),
providing an official record of the recent escalation.

The Saudi-led coalition backs Yemen’s internationally recognized government against
the Houthis, who control Sanaa. The renewed hostilities have disrupted a fragile
reduction in cross-border attacks dating from the 2022 UN-brokered truce.
