**October 31, 2026 —** OpenAI has reportedly lowered the target for its latest funding
round from $30 billion to about $20 billion, with the proposed valuation falling
from $1.4 trillion to $1.25 trillion. The numbers come from a [Financial Times report](https://www.ft.com/content/7a3ad950-1b3b-4d9e-8c15-65a61ae6180f),
rather than an announcement by OpenAI. That distinction matters: a financing target
is not money already received, and a proposed valuation is not a completed market
transaction.

## What the reporting establishes

The Financial Times says some investors reduced their planned commitments before
a Friday deadline, leaving the first close expected to fall short of the revised
$20 billion target. [Reuters reported the FT findings](https://www.reuters.com/business/openai-cuts-funding-target-by-10-billion-ft-reports-2026-10-31/)
on October 31 and said OpenAI and several prospective investors had not immediately
responded to requests for comment outside business hours.

Separately, [The Wall Street Journal](https://www.wsj.com/tech/ai/openai-raises-less-than-half-of-30-billion-target-in-latest-round-91aecdc5)
reported that roughly $11 billion in commitments had been secured. That is a reported
commitment figure, not confirmation that $11 billion has been paid into the company.
Both reports place the financing at a proposed $1.25 trillion valuation.

## Why a smaller round still matters

The immediate change is a $10 billion reduction in the amount OpenAI hopes to raise,
equivalent to one-third of its earlier target. The reported $150 billion valuation
adjustment is a separate measure: it reflects a change in the price investors are
being asked to accept, not a $150 billion cash loss.

The larger issue is the cost of expanding advanced AI. Training and serving models
require chips, power, data centers and long-term computing contracts. A company
can grow sales rapidly and still need fresh financing if the timing of infrastructure
payments outpaces the cash it generates. Investors therefore have to judge not only
demand for AI services, but also how quickly that demand converts into durable margins
and free cash flow.

The reports arrive after a broad technology-stock decline. Reuters said the Nasdaq
fell roughly 2.9% on Friday, October 30. That market move provides context for tighter
financing conditions, but it does not prove that the stock-market selloff alone
caused individual investors to revise their commitments.

## What remains uncertain

The final size and timing of the funding round, its precise terms and any potential
future listing remain subject to change. The Financial Times named prospective backers,
including a group of UAE investors, but reported participation should not be confused
with a fully completed investment. The key next evidence will be a formal company
statement, closing documents or confirmed investor disclosures.

**Bottom line:** The reported reset does not show that AI demand has disappeared.
It shows that even the sector’s most prominent developers must demonstrate a credible
route from ambitious computing investment to sustainable returns.
