**October 28, 2026 —** Norwegian Air Shuttle’s latest quarterly report presents
a more complicated picture than a simple earnings beat. The Nordic airline group
earned NOK 2.728 billion in operating profit in the July–September quarter, ahead
of the roughly NOK 2.3 billion analysts expected, according to Reuters. Yet operating
profit was **lower than the NOK 3.071 billion reported a year earlier**, even as
passenger numbers and revenue increased.

## More passengers, but a thinner margin

The [company’s October 28 quarterly report](https://www.norwegian.com/globalassets/ip/documents/about-us/company/investor-relations/reports-and-presentations/quarterly-results/2026/norwegian-q3-2026-report.pdf)
records group revenue of NOK 12.739 billion, up from NOK 12.252 billion in the same
period of 2025. The operating margin narrowed to 21.4% from 25.1%. Group net profit
fell to NOK 1.838 billion from NOK 2.549 billion. Those figures matter: the business
carried more traffic, but the additional revenue did not translate into higher reported
earnings.

Norwegian and regional carrier Widerøe together transported about 8.75 million passengers,
compared with 8.41 million a year earlier. Norwegian’s load factor — the proportion
of seats filled — reached 88.5%, a slight improvement. Its punctuality improved
to 80.7%, while Widerøe reported 93.5%. Operational reliability is an important
differentiator for passengers, but it does not insulate an airline from fuel and
leasing costs.

## Why the winter schedule matters

The most consequential warning is about the months ahead. Norwegian says it is cutting
its monthly winter capacity by 25% to 40% compared with October, a normal response
to seasonal demand. Separately, it has **reduced its originally planned first-quarter
2027 capacity by more than 5%** after higher jet-fuel prices and the cancellation
of winter flights to Dubai amid Middle East uncertainty.

These are two different comparisons: the seasonal winter reduction is measured against
October 2026, while the additional 2027 reduction is measured against the airline’s
earlier plan. Neither means Norwegian has announced a 40% year-on-year collapse
in service. The group says advance bookings remain encouraging, with more tickets
sold than at the same point last year.

## Growth ambitions meet cost discipline

Norwegian ended September with 98 aircraft in its own fleet, including 39 Boeing
737 MAX 8 jets, while Widerøe operated 50 aircraft. The company is also working
toward acquiring Nordic Leisure Travel Group, subject to regulatory approval, in
a move intended to link air travel with hotels and package holidays. The planned
deal has not yet closed, and projected benefits should not be treated as realized
earnings.

The quarterly results suggest a balancing act for European airlines: protect seat
occupancy and customer service while adjusting capacity quickly when fuel costs
or regional security risks change. For travelers, the key practical question is
which specific routes and dates are affected by schedule revisions; the financial
report alone does not establish individual flight cancellations beyond the disclosed
Dubai change.
