**October 28, 2026.** NASA’s Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory has ended its scientific
mission after nearly 22 years in orbit. The telescope made its final observations
on October 20, and NASA says it is expected to re-enter Earth’s atmosphere in the
coming weeks. The end of the spacecraft is certain; its precise re-entry timing
remains an estimate.

## Why a successful telescope had to stop

Launched on November 20, 2004 for a two-year primary mission, Swift became an unusually
productive observer of rapidly changing events in the universe. It could detect
a burst of high-energy radiation, send an alert and rapidly point other instruments
at the same location before the fading afterglow disappeared.

But the observatory operated in low Earth orbit, where traces of the atmosphere
gradually slow satellites. Increased solar activity expanded the upper atmosphere
and accelerated that drag. NASA says Swift descended to about **275 kilometers (
171 miles)** on October 20, where it could no longer hold the steady pointing needed
for science. Controllers then ended operations in preparation for re-entry.

## Why the attempted rescue did not save it

NASA had contracted the commercial company Katalyst Space to attempt an orbital
boost using a robotic spacecraft called LINK. The plan was to capture Swift and
lift it into a higher orbit, extending its useful life while testing satellite-servicing
technology.

The effort did not achieve the planned boost. NASA announced in August that problems
with LINK’s attitude control prevented the capture and orbit-raising attempt. The
agency subsequently described lessons from the high-risk demonstration. This was
not a case of Swift suddenly malfunctioning in its scientific instruments: the overriding
constraint was orbital altitude and the inability to reverse the decline.

## The scientific record it leaves behind

Swift observed **more than 2,000 gamma-ray bursts** and **over 1,400 supernovae**,
according to NASA. Its data have contributed to approximately 7,000 scientific papers.
The archive includes over 1.5 million ultraviolet/optical images and roughly 12
terabytes of observations, giving astronomers years of material to revisit.

One especially important capability was rapid follow-up of short gamma-ray bursts.
These flashes can last less than two seconds, so early measurements help researchers
investigate violent events such as neutron-star mergers. Swift’s value was not just
its own photographs; it also served as a fast alert system for observatories around
the world.

## What happens next

NASA says it is considering how other existing and future missions can preserve
rapid-response coverage. No single replacement has been identified here as already
matching Swift’s combination of instruments, speed and flexibility. The immediate
loss is an operational capability, not the scientific data already collected.
