# Moonshot Cuts Hacking Capability in Kimi K3.1 Pro Before Open-Weight Release

**BEIJING, October 24, 2026 —** Chinese AI developer Moonshot AI says it deliberately
limited the offensive cybersecurity abilities of its newly released Kimi K3.1 Pro
model before making its downloadable weights available to outside developers. The
decision highlights a growing dilemma for AI companies: how to make advanced coding
tools widely accessible without also making automated hacking easier.

## What Moonshot changed

In its [October 24 technical announcement](https://www.kimi.com/en/blog/kimi-k3-1-pro),
Moonshot said it removed cyber-related material from two stages of model development:
its mid-training dataset and reinforcement-learning environments. The company says
the adjustments preserved broader programming usefulness while reducing performance
on offensive security tasks.

On Moonshot’s internal _xdev-bench-hard_ test, which asks an AI agent to exploit
software vulnerabilities in a controlled environment, the final K3.1 Pro scored **
81.0%**, compared with **90.5%** for an otherwise similar checkpoint without the
targeted restrictions. The 9.5-percentage-point difference is a company-reported
result, **not an independently verified measure of real-world hacking risk**. The
final model still performed substantially better than the older K3, which Moonshot
scored at 33.3%.

## Why open weights raise the stakes

Open-weight models allow developers to download and run the underlying model files
on their own infrastructure. That can help independent security teams audit old 
code, but it also means the original developer cannot reliably monitor or revoke
every deployed copy. Reuters independently reported the announcement and its broader
security implications on October 24.

Moonshot says K3.1 Pro is available through its hosted products and API now, with
full model weights **planned for release by November 4**. Its technical blog describes
a one-million-token context window and a Highspeed version that it says responds
two to three times faster. Those capability and speed claims are from Moonshot, 
not independent Tectonics tests.

## What to watch next

The important test will come after the weights are distributed: independent researchers
can then evaluate whether the reduced cyber benchmark score translates into a meaningful
change in misuse potential. The announcement also raises a broader policy question
about which safeguards remain effective when powerful models are freely copied and
modified.
