# Michigan Senate Race Shaken as Democrat Haley Stevens Backs Republican Mike Rogers

**DETROIT, Nov. 1, 2026 —** A closely watched race for an open U.S. Senate seat 
in Michigan took an unexpected turn on Sunday when Democratic Rep. Haley Stevens
endorsed Republican Mike Rogers instead of Abdul El-Sayed, the Democrat who defeated
her in the August primary. The reversal came just two days before the Nov. 3 election,
when the seat being vacated by Democratic Sen. Gary Peters will be decided.

## A last-minute break with her party

Stevens appeared with Rogers at a Detroit church service and subsequently said she
would vote for him while supporting other Democrats on her ballot. She said El-Sayed’s
campaign had made clear she was not welcome at a planned joint appearance. Rogers

that the endorsement followed an escalating dispute over campaign rhetoric and an
outside group’s advertisement concerning Israel, which El-Sayed had criticized.

El-Sayed, a former county health official, sought to turn attention back to his 
economic and health-care agenda. Democratic leaders, including Senate Democratic
leader Chuck Schumer, condemned Stevens’ decision and reiterated their support for
El-Sayed. The endorsement also prompted a reported split among Stevens’ staff, according

## Why the timing matters

The Michigan contest is one of several competitive Senate races that could affect
the chamber’s balance of power. Stevens had previously promised to support the Democratic
nominee after losing the primary. Her change of position therefore represents more
than an ordinary cross-party endorsement: it puts a prominent Democratic officeholder
at odds with her own party’s candidate at the very end of the campaign.

But an endorsement is not a vote count. Its actual electoral effect is unknown, 
especially because many voters had already cast ballots before Sunday’s announcement.
It could persuade some undecided or cross-party voters, motivate supporters of either
candidate, or have little measurable impact. No result should be inferred from the
endorsement alone.

## A dispute with implications beyond Tuesday

The public rupture also highlights a continuing disagreement among Democrats over
Israel, campaign language and how the party should unite after contested primaries.
