**COLLEGE FOOTBALL | FINAL | Saturday, October 24, 2026 — No. 1 Miami 52, Pittsburgh
23.**

Miami faced its first test as the nation’s No. 1-ranked college football team in
nearly a quarter-century and responded with a decisive 52–23 win over Pittsburgh
at Hard Rock Stadium. The most telling number was not simply the 29-point margin:
Miami scored on seven of its first eight possessions, leaving the Panthers little
room to force a competitive fourth quarter.

## Toney’s record, Mensah’s precision

Receiver **Malachi Toney** caught a **school-record 16 passes** for 194 yards and
three touchdowns, eclipsing Miami’s previous single-game reception mark of 13. Quarterback**
Darian Mensah** completed 31 of 37 passes for 387 yards and four touchdowns. Running
back Javian Mallory added two rushing scores.

The connection between Mensah and Toney gave Miami a reliable answer to Pittsburgh’s
defensive coverage. Toney already had 159 receiving yards at halftime. Just as importantly,
Miami converted 10 of its first 12 third downs, extending drives rather than depending
solely on explosive plays.

## Why the performance carries weight

Miami’s victory came amid celebrations marking 25 years since the program’s 2001
national championship team. But the current Hurricanes’ most significant achievement
was practical: they improved to **7–0 overall and 5–0 in Atlantic Coast Conference
play** while avoiding the stumble that had recently afflicted other No. 1 teams.

Pittsburgh’s Blue Hicks produced 149 receiving yards and a touchdown, but the Panthers
fell to 5–3. Miami’s efficiency on early possessions ensured those individual gains
never became a sustained threat to the outcome.

## What’s next

Miami visits North Carolina on October 31, while Pittsburgh hosts Georgia Tech the
same day. The next AP ranking had not been released at the time of this report,
so Miami’s No. 1 designation refers to the ranking entering Saturday’s game.
