**October 31, 2026 —** Mexico’s Day of the Dead celebrations are drawing visitors
to candlelit altars, public processions and family remembrance ceremonies. But one
of the best-known destinations has an important change this year: tourists cannot
enter the cemetery on Janitzio island during the November 1–2 observances. The island
itself is _not_ closed to visitors.

## What is changing on Janitzio?

The [Michoacán state government said on October 21](https://michoacan.gob.mx/noticias/noche-de-muertos-en-janitzio-tendra-altares-monumentales-y-actividades-tradicionales/)
that the cemetery is undergoing rehabilitation work. The public will be kept outside
the burial ground, while families from the island will retain access to commemorate
their relatives. Visitors can view the area from a designated panoramic walkway
with controlled, continuous movement.

The restriction follows damage and slope instability near the cemetery, according
to [N+ reporting published October 23](https://www.nmas.com.mx/michoacan/sociedad/isla-janitzio-michoacan-cerrada-dia-de-muertos-2026-por-que-no-habra-acceso-panteon/).
That physical safety issue matters: it would be misleading to suggest that tourism
alone caused the closure. The decision also highlights the broader tension between
a community’s private rituals and the public attention they attract.

## What visitors can still experience

The state government describes monumental altars, cultural programming and traditional
activities on Janitzio. Visitors may still travel to the island and participate
in public-facing events, subject to local access and crowd-management rules. They
should not assume that a ticket or boat journey grants entry to the cemetery or
a close-up view of a family vigil.

Elsewhere in Mexico, the season brings marigold displays, home _ofrendas_ honoring
deceased relatives, food, music and parades. [Associated Press reporting on October 31](https://apnews.com/article/3a7842be9ad9d7e63d63b33334cad7de)
describes the growing international appeal of the celebrations, as well as concerns
about preserving their meaning for the communities that maintain them. The rituals
are not simply Halloween attractions: for participating families, they are acts
of memory, hospitality and continuity.

## Why this is more than a travel restriction

Janitzio illustrates a challenge facing destinations whose living traditions become
global visitor draws. Local authorities must protect vulnerable infrastructure and
manage large crowds, but also leave room for families to observe customs without
turning remembrance into a spectator performance. This year’s separation between
a public viewing walkway and the family cemetery is a concrete example of that balancing
act.

**For visitors:** confirm current access rules with Michoacán tourism authorities
before traveling, follow the designated routes, and ask permission before photographing
individuals or private ceremonies. Dates and arrangements can change; this report
describes official information available as of October 31, not a live crowd or transport
advisory.
