**MANILA, October 30, 2026 —** Philippine authorities raised the alert for Mayon
Volcano to Level 3 after a moderately explosive eruption sent ash approximately
3,000 metres above its summit, according to a [12:30 p.m. local-time bulletin from the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS)](https://volcano.phivolcs.dost.gov.ph/bulletin/activity-mvo?bid=16957&lang=en).
The alert is a warning of increased potential for hazardous activity, not a prediction
that a particular eruption will occur at a particular hour.

The eruption began at **11:53 a.m. Philippine time**. PHIVOLCS reported that the
ash plume moved west-southwest in prevailing winds and that ashfall could affect
Daraga, Camalig, Guinobatan and neighbouring communities in Albay province. Its
announcement changed Mayon’s status from Level 2, described as decreased unrest,
to **Level 3, an increased tendency toward a hazardous eruption**.

## Why the six-kilometre zone matters

PHIVOLCS recommended evacuating the volcano’s **six-kilometre-radius Permanent Danger
Zone**. The agency identified possible pyroclastic density currents, lava flows
and rockfalls as threats, particularly on the volcano’s upper and middle slopes
in the days to weeks ahead. Pyroclastic density currents are fast-moving mixtures
of extremely hot gas, ash and volcanic debris; their danger is not limited to where
ash visibly settles.

Officials also warned of lahars and sediment-laden flows along channels draining
the mountain. Those hazards can affect areas beyond the most visibly active crater,
especially when rain mobilises loose volcanic material. Residents should follow
local evacuation orders and the latest PHIVOLCS updates rather than treating a fixed
distance as a guarantee of safety.

## What the ash plume means for towns and flights

An ash plume’s reported height describes the column above the summit, not a confirmed
blanket of ash over every settlement downwind. The direction and intensity of ashfall
depend on changing winds and the course of the eruption. PHIVOLCS advised civil
aviation authorities to warn pilots away from the summit area because volcanic ash
can endanger aircraft.

[GMA News](https://www.gmanetwork.com/news/topstories/regions/1007703/mayon-volcano-erupts-alert-level-3-raised-phivolcs/story/)
independently reported the alert change and the agency’s warning for Albay communities.
[CNA, citing AFP](https://www.channelnewsasia.com/asia/philippines-raises-volcano-alert-mount-mayon-6506006),
reported no immediate confirmed casualties or damage at its reporting cutoff. That
is not an assurance that impacts will remain absent as monitoring continues.

## What is known — and what remains uncertain

The documented facts are the eruption’s reported start time, the 3,000-metre plume,
the Level 3 declaration and the official hazard recommendations. The precise future
duration and intensity of activity, the extent of any subsequent ashfall and the
number of people who may need assistance cannot yet be established from the initial
bulletin. Those details should be updated only when new official observations are
available.
