**November 2, 2026 — NFL Week 8.** Lamar Jackson’s return to the Baltimore Ravens
lasted a single offensive snap. The quarterback injured his right throwing thumb
in Sunday’s game against the Buffalo Bills, and head coach Jesse Minter said Jackson
will need surgery and be placed on injured reserve. Whether the injury will end
his season has **not** been determined.

The Ravens lost **36–10** in Buffalo on November 1 and fell to 4–4. The result was
final, not a live score. The [Ravens’ official game-day report](https://www.baltimoreravens.com/news/lamar-jackson-thumb-injured-ravens-bills-2026)
confirms Jackson’s right hand struck Buffalo pass rusher Greg Rousseau’s arm as
he attempted a throw. Jackson had only just returned from an ankle injury that kept
him out of the previous three games.

## What the team has confirmed — and what remains unknown

After the game, Minter said Jackson would require surgery and go on injured reserve,
according to the [Associated Press](https://apnews.com/article/baltimore-ravens-qb-lamar-jackson-0baebd49f4865d674f0a877d39cd39d3)
and [Reuters](https://www.reuters.com/sports/ravens-qb-lamar-jackson-needs-thumb-surgery-headed-ir--flm-2026-11-01/).
Injured reserve means Jackson must miss at least four games. The possibility of
a longer absence is serious, but a confirmed season-ending diagnosis or return date
has not been announced. It would be inaccurate to describe his season as definitively
over.

The problem extends beyond the starter. Backup Tyler Huntley also exited Sunday’s
game with a toe injury. That forced Baltimore to use undrafted rookie Joe Fagnano,
making his regular-season debut. Fagnano completed 10 of 21 passes for 91 yards
with an interception, Reuters reported. Buffalo’s defense held Baltimore to 144
total yards.

## Why the timing is especially damaging

Baltimore now faces a compressed preparation window before hosting the Jacksonville
Jaguars on **Thursday, November 5**. With Jackson headed to injured reserve and
Huntley’s availability uncertain, the team must settle its quarterback depth chart
quickly. The practical question is not only who starts Thursday; it is whether the
Ravens can sustain an offense built around Jackson’s unique passing and rushing
threats for an extended stretch.

Jackson’s absence also changes how opposing defenses can prepare. Without his mobility
and off-schedule playmaking, Baltimore may need shorter passing concepts, more protection
and a lower-risk approach. Those are tactical possibilities, not confirmed coaching
decisions.
