**FRANKFURT, 29 October 2026 —** Christine Lagarde will step down as president of
the European Central Bank on 7 February 2027, the ECB confirmed on Thursday, bringing
forward a leadership change while policymakers confront renewed energy-driven inflation
risks. On the same day, the bank held its three key interest rates unchanged, including
its 2.50% deposit rate.

The two announcements matter for different reasons. The rate decision governs borrowing
conditions today; the leadership transition introduces a new political appointment
process at a time when the euro area is weighing the effects of higher energy prices
against weakening growth prospects. Neither announcement, on its own, establishes
what the ECB will do at its next meeting.

## What the ECB has actually confirmed

In a [29 October statement](https://www.ecb.europa.eu/press/pr/date/2026/html/ecb.pr261029~abbb6dc64b.en.html),
the ECB said Lagarde had informed its Governing Council and European Council President
António Costa that she would leave on 7 February 2027. The European Council will
appoint a successor through the procedure specified in Article 283 of the Treaty
on the Functioning of the European Union. The announcement did not name a successor
or give a reason for her decision.

Lagarde’s term had been scheduled to finish in October 2027. The earlier departure
means European leaders must address the ECB presidency sooner than previously expected.
[Associated Press reporting](https://apnews.com/article/c657d818e8f487f2ce990fe57ba55d4a)
places the timing in the context of France’s 2027 presidential election and other
upcoming ECB leadership vacancies. That political context is not the same as an
official ECB explanation for the resignation.

## Rates unchanged, but the inflation dilemma remains

In its separate [monetary-policy decision](https://www.ecb.europa.eu/press/pr/date/2026/html/ecb.mp261029~9a493adf17.en.html),
the Governing Council left the deposit facility at **2.50%**, the main refinancing
rate at **2.65%** and the marginal lending facility at **2.90%**. The bank said
rising energy costs threaten to push inflation higher while also weighing on economic
growth. It added that underlying inflation had so far been broadly stable and wages
had not shown a material response to the latest shock.

That distinction is important: an energy-price spike can raise headline inflation
even as tighter financial conditions restrain spending. The ECB says the magnitude
and duration of the energy shock could create further indirect effects, but it has**
not pre-committed to a future rate path**. Forecasts of an imminent rate increase
should therefore be presented as market expectations, not as an announced decision.

## Why the succession matters beyond Frankfurt

The ECB presidency carries influence over the framing of policy debates, public
communication and the institution’s ability to build consensus across countries
with different inflation and growth pressures. The Governing Council, rather than
the president acting alone, sets monetary policy. A leadership change does not automatically
mean a rate-policy reversal.

Reuters reported that former central-bank governors **Klaas Knot** and **Pablo Hernández
de Cos** have been discussed as possible successors, but neither is an announced
appointment. The choice rests with European institutions, not with market commentators
or the outgoing president. See [Reuters’ 29 October report](https://www.reuters.com/business/finance/ecb-president-lagarde-resigns-effective-feb-7-2026-10-29/)
for the announcement and succession context.

## What to watch next

For households and businesses, the immediate questions are whether energy prices
continue to rise, whether inflation pressures spread to wages and services, and
how banks respond to financing conditions. For investors and policymakers, attention
will also turn to the timetable for the European Council’s appointment and to whether
the incoming president can preserve a clear, data-dependent policy message.
