**October 25, 2026 | Tectonics Business and World.** Israel’s central bank has publicly
challenged Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s suggestion that cryptocurrency and
blockchain systems could help the country operate if international financial sanctions
expand. The dispute, unfolding ahead of Tuesday’s Israeli election, is about more
than digital assets: it raises questions about access to global banking, trade relationships
and investor confidence.

## What happened—and when?

In a Friday, October 23 television interview, Netanyahu said Israel was preparing
alternative financial arrangements for a scenario involving sanctions on banks.
When asked about cryptocurrency and blockchain, he acknowledged them as possible
tools. On Saturday, October 24, the Bank of Israel rejected the idea that cryptocurrency
could provide a route around sanctions. By Sunday, October 25, Reuters reported
that more than 100 economists, including former central-bank officials, had signed
a warning about the economic risks. The proposal is not a confirmed operational
system, and the reported concerns are warnings rather than measured economic effects.

## Why the central bank objects

The central bank’s argument, as reported by [Reuters](https://www.reuters.com/business/finance/netanyahu-rebuked-plan-use-crypto-bypass-economic-sanctions-2026-10-25/)
and [Israeli business newspaper Globes](https://en.globes.co.il/en/article-boi-slams-netanyahus-crypto-plan-for-evading-sanctions-1001560620),
is that cryptocurrencies cannot reliably circumvent sanctions. It urged the political
leadership to preserve economic relationships with major trading partners and prevent
sanctions in the first place.

That distinction matters. Public blockchain transactions can be traceable, and businesses
still depend on banks, regulated exchanges, counterparties and payment infrastructure
to convert assets into usable money. Digital transfers do not automatically restore
the trade finance, insurance or international settlement services that broad restrictions
could disrupt. These are practical limitations, not proof that any particular sanction
is currently in force against Israel’s banking system.

## What economists and political opponents say

Reuters reported on Sunday that more than 100 economists warned the approach could
worsen investment, employment and living standards if isolation deepened. Opposition
politicians also criticized the proposal. Netanyahu, meanwhile, has framed preparations
for alternative payment systems as a contingency against potential future restrictions.
Both the government’s stated rationale and its critics’ objections deserve scrutiny;
neither is evidence that the proposed system would work at national scale.

 * **Policy detail:** Whether officials release a concrete plan, its legal basis,
   safeguards and operational partners.
 * **Trade response:** Whether restrictions affecting settlements expand into broader
   banking or commercial measures.
 * **Election context:** Tuesday’s vote could influence the political mandate for
   any follow-up proposal.
 * **Market evidence:** Watch actual banking, investment and currency data rather
than assuming hypothetical outcomes have already occurred.
