When a headline races across social media, the fastest way to avoid spreading a
mistake is to separate what is **confirmed** from what is merely being repeated.
A viral post, dramatic video or confident screenshot is not proof by itself. This
practical checklist helps readers assess a claim before forwarding it.

## 1. Find the original claim

Look beyond the repost. Who first reported the information? Is it a firsthand account,
an official statement, a named witness, a documented report, or another account
quoting someone else? Follow links back to the earliest attributable evidence.

## 2. Check the date, place and context

Old footage and photographs can circulate as if they depict a new event. Confirm
when and where material was recorded, and whether the accompanying caption accurately
describes the image. A real video can still support a false headline when presented
out of context.

## 3. Look for independent corroboration

Several websites repeating one anonymous social post are not several independent
confirmations. Check whether separate reporting organizations, public records or
identifiable primary sources have independently established the main facts. If not,
treat the claim as unconfirmed.

## 4. Separate evidence from interpretation

An official investigation, scientific study or court filing can establish what a
document says, but it may not establish every conclusion drawn from it. Check the
scope, uncertainty, qualifications and what remains unknown. In developing stories,
early figures and descriptions may change.

## 5. Examine photographs and video critically

Look for credible original uploads, identifiable location markers and context. AI-
generated imagery and manipulated clips increase the importance of checking provenance.
Do not assume an image is authentic because it looks convincing or has been widely
shared.

## 6. Read past the headline

Strong headlines should faithfully describe the reporting. Check that the article
provides the names, dates, source links or documentary evidence supporting its central
claim. Be cautious with truncated titles, vague “sources say” claims and articles
whose main text does not match the headline.

## 7. Check corrections and updates

Responsible publishers acknowledge substantive mistakes. An article with a clear
correction or update history can be more trustworthy than an uncorrected viral screenshot.
Compare the current article against any earlier versions if a claim is disputed.

## 8. Pause before sharing consequential claims

Claims involving public safety, health, finance, allegations against individuals
or an ongoing emergency deserve particular care. If verification is incomplete,
share the uncertainty explicitly—or do not share the claim.

## What professional news standards emphasize

The [Associated Press’ News Values and Principles](https://www.ap.org/about/news-values-and-principles/)
emphasize accuracy, transparency about sources, appropriate attribution and correction
of mistakes. [Reuters’ Journalistic Standards](https://reutersagency.com/about/standards-values/)
likewise describe the value of reliable sourcing, especially identifiable sources.
These external standards are useful references, not a claim that Tectonics is affiliated
with either organization.
