**MEXICO CITY, October 31, 2026 —** Lewis Hamilton took his first regular Formula
1 Grand Prix pole position for Ferrari on Saturday, beating Mercedes driver George
Russell by just **0.009 seconds** in qualifying for the Mexico City Grand Prix.
The seven-time world champion set a fastest lap of **1 minute 16.514 seconds**,
according to [Formula 1’s official session report](https://www.formula1.com/en/latest/article/hamilton-clinches-first-pole-with-ferrari-in-qualifying-at-the-mexico-city-gp.4GffzFhlnOxOjbHHMc0AJI).
It was the 105th pole of Hamilton’s career — and a notable breakthrough with his
current team, not a race victory.

## Why nine thousandths matter

Russell’s 1:16.523 was almost indistinguishable on a stopwatch, but the final qualifying
order puts Hamilton at the front of the grid for Sunday’s 71-lap race. Ferrari teammate
Charles Leclerc qualified third in 1:16.633. Hamilton’s late lap, rather than a
large performance advantage, decided the session. The result highlights how a tiny
difference in execution can alter the starting order; it does not establish which
car will be fastest over a full race distance.

Official qualifying results initially placed Max Verstappen fourth and championship
leader Kimi Antonelli fifth. However, [Formula 1 reported](https://www.formula1.com/en/latest/article/hamilton-clinches-first-pole-with-ferrari-in-qualifying-at-the-mexico-city-gp.4GffzFhlnOxOjbHHMc0AJI)
that Verstappen would lose a grid position following a Friday practice incident.
Antonelli therefore stands to start fourth, subject to the confirmed starting grid.
These distinctions are important: qualifying classification and the eventual race
grid can differ because of penalties.

## The championship is still unresolved

Antonelli arrived in Mexico in position to potentially secure the drivers’ championship,
but qualifying alone cannot award him the title. The outcome depends on Sunday’s
race and the championship arithmetic. [Formula 1’s official race preview](https://www.formula1.com/en/latest/article/what-time-is-the-formula-1-2026-mexico-city-grand-prix-and-how-can-i-watch-it.7ugr1iuBkVF1pD5fqJHNA3)
described the title stakes before the weekend. Any declaration of a new champion
before the race finishes would be premature.

## What Hamilton must convert on Sunday

The Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez sits more than two kilometres above sea level,
making cooling and aerodynamic efficiency important technical considerations. Starting
first helps Hamilton control the opening phase, but strategy, tyre degradation,
pit stops and race incidents can still overturn the order. The significant question
is whether Ferrari can turn one exceptional lap into sustained race pace.

The **Mexico City Grand Prix is scheduled for Sunday, November 1, at 2 p.m. local
time (20:00 UTC)**. That is a scheduled start, not a reported result. See [the official event hub](https://www.formula1.com/en/racing/2026/mexico)
for confirmed results and timing.
