# Greenland Opens Ilulissat International Airport—What the New Copenhagen Link Really Changes

**October 31, 2026 | Ilulissat, Greenland.** A new international airport has opened
in Ilulissat, creating a direct gateway from Copenhagen to the icebergs and communities
of Disko Bay. The 2,200-metre runway replaces the limitations of the previous small
regional airfield and completes a three-airport expansion that is reshaping how 
visitors and residents travel across Greenland.

## A new route—but not a daily flight

[Greenland Airports confirmed](https://www.airports.gl/en/article/approval-secured-ilulissat-airport-opens-thursday-2/)
the opening on October 29 after receiving approval from Denmark’s civil aviation
regulator. Air Greenland marked the launch with an inaugural Copenhagen–Ilulissat
flight aboard its Airbus A330neo. The [airline’s published schedule](https://www.airgreenland.com/campaigns/ilulissat-airport-opening)
says regular winter services begin November 2, operated by Jettime, mainly once 
a week on Wednesdays. Selected additional Monday services are planned for holiday
and late-winter periods.

From April 2027, Air Greenland expects to take over the direct route with its Airbus
A320neo. It plans to increase frequency to as many as six weekly rotations in the
peak summer season. Those are planned services, not flights already operating today;
travelers should check current schedules and weather-related changes before booking.

## Why the airport matters beyond tourism

Ilulissat is a gateway to the UNESCO-listed Icefjord and to smaller North Greenland
communities. Direct international arrivals can eliminate a connection through Nuuk
or another Greenlandic airport for some passengers. That could support local hotels,
tour operators, cargo businesses and regional travel—but it also shifts demand toward
an area with limited accommodation and sensitive Arctic landscapes.

The opening completes Greenland’s recent airport programme after Nuuk’s international
airport opened in 2024 and Qaqortoq’s in April 2026. Greenland Airports says the
facilities will expand operations in phases, with a goal of full operational capacity
by summer 2027. A new runway is an infrastructure achievement; broader economic 
benefits will depend on reliable flights, regional connections, investment and local
capacity.

## What visitors should check

The new international link does not mean every settlement is reachable the same 
day. Air Greenland’s timetable shows that some northern destinations still require
an overnight stop, while regional flights and helicopters remain essential. Seasonal
weather and limited flight frequency can also affect itineraries. For travel planning,
the most useful change is direct access to Ilulissat from Copenhagen on published
operating days—not a guarantee of seamless onward travel.

**The bigger picture:** As Greenland seeks to diversify an economy heavily dependent
on fishing, international access could broaden the tourism sector. Yet growth is
not automatic: protecting the Icefjord environment and ensuring benefits reach nearby
communities will be as important as filling aircraft seats.
