**November 2, 2026 —** Gotham FC finished the National Women’s Soccer League regular
season on top, beating Utah Royals FC 2–0 on Sunday, November 1, to secure the first
NWSL Shield in the club’s history. But the trophy for the best regular-season record
is not the championship: Gotham must still navigate the playoffs to complete its
season.

Guro Reiten struck in the ninth minute at Sports Illustrated Stadium in Harrison,
New Jersey. Jaedyn Shaw, returning after missing two matches with a knee injury,
added the second goal in the 80th minute from a Midge Purce delivery. The result
was **final**, not a live score or a highlight from an earlier meeting between the
clubs.

## Why Decision Day mattered

Gotham ended the 2026 regular season with an 18–5–7 record and 61 points. Its first
Shield also earned the No. 1 playoff seed and home-field advantage through the semifinals.
The club’s own match report says the result set team records for wins and points;
goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger registered her 11th regular-season shutout of the year.

All 16 NWSL teams played their final regular-season matches simultaneously on November
1, with ESPN providing coordinated coverage. The playoff field came into focus only
after those results: Seattle Reign secured the eighth seed, while Utah also qualified
for the postseason. Gotham’s quarterfinal opponent will be Seattle on **Sunday,
November 8, at 12:30 p.m. Eastern**.

## A title won, another still to chase

The Shield rewards consistency across the league campaign. A knockout title demands
a different skill: handling the pressure of a single decisive match. Gotham knows
that distinction well. Its 2023 and 2025 NWSL championships came from low playoff
seeds; this year it enters as the team everyone else must beat.

Reiten’s early finish and Shaw’s late insurance goal gave Gotham control of the
final day, but the club’s next challenge is maintaining that edge after a week’s
pause. Seattle, having secured the last postseason berth, arrives with little to
lose. The November 8 quarterfinal is a scheduled fixture, not a result.
