**Reporting update — October 31, 2026, 15:05 UTC:** Demonstrations have begun. Police
counted approximately **6,000 participants across Berlin, Frankfurt and Munich combined**
by Saturday afternoon, according to Reuters; organisers had projected 36,000 for
those three cities and approximately 182,000 across Germany. These are **partial
city counts, not a final national turnout**. The gap illustrates why online registrations
and organisers’ projections must not be presented as attendance. Protesters have
called for better schools, lower living costs and opposition to compulsory military
service. [Reuters, October 31](https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/gen-z-protests-reach-germany-over-160000-expected-halloween-rallies-2026-10-31/)
also reports that the rallies have generally proceeded peacefully so far; local
turnout can change as marches continue. [dpa/Welt’s Frankfurt dispatch](https://www.welt.de/article6ae5efdaaedea8cd9ffbf65b)
separately reported initial police counts in the hundreds near the European Central
Bank, underscoring the time-sensitive nature of interim figures.

**BERLIN, October 31, 2026 —** Youth-led demonstrations are planned across Germany
on Saturday, with organisers anticipating more than 160,000 participants in 34 cities.
The number is a forecast from the movement, not a count of people who have attended.
At the time of this report, the rallies had not yet produced a verified nationwide
turnout figure.

The campaign, _Gen Z regelt_, says it wants greater investment in education, relief
from high living costs and opposition to compulsory military service. Events are
planned in Berlin, Frankfurt and Munich, among other cities, according to [Reuters reporting published early on October 31](https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/gen-z-protests-reach-germany-over-160000-expected-halloween-rallies-2026-10-31/).
Separate regional reporting describes a Munich march scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
at Geschwister-Scholl-Platz and a Mainz gathering scheduled for 2 p.m. at Gutenbergplatz.
Schedules and attendance can change.

## What the numbers actually show

The headline figure measures organisers’ expectations. It cannot establish how many
people will turn out, how many demonstrations will proceed as scheduled, or whether
the events will be peaceful. Comparing an advance sign-up or projected crowd with
an official post-event attendance estimate would confuse two different measurements.

The planned gatherings come amid an argument over the distribution of public resources
between generations. Education facilities, the cost of everyday essentials and the
prospect of military service are concrete policy questions, but participants do
not necessarily agree on every remedy. The movement’s broad appeal should not be
mistaken for a single political programme.

## Security concerns are not evidence of violence

Authorities say they expect demonstrations to be largely peaceful while warning
that extremist groups could try to exploit the gatherings. Some businesses along
Berlin’s Kurfürstendamm reportedly boarded up windows ahead of Saturday. Those precautions
do not establish that demonstrators have committed violence or that unrest is inevitable.

There are also questions about the movement’s representation. Germany’s national
school-student umbrella organisation, BSK, has distanced itself from _Gen Z regelt_
while acknowledging that young people’s concerns deserve attention; it plans a separate
protest on November 20. That distinction matters: criticism of an organiser does
not automatically invalidate the grievances of people who might join a rally.

## What to watch next

The most meaningful updates will be verified attendance figures, confirmed changes
to protest routes, statements from police and organisers, and any documented policy
response. Until then, descriptions of a nationwide turnout or clashes would be premature.
With France also preparing for demonstrations on October 31, comparisons across
borders should separate the German organisers’ demands from events in other countries.
