**October 30, 2026 — Reporting cutoff: approximately 11:00 UTC.** Dockworkers across
Europe and other regions are staging strikes, walkouts and demonstrations against
the movement of weapons through commercial ports, while pressing demands over wages,
working conditions and automation. The action is unusually broad, but its practical
effect on shipping remains uncertain.

Organizers have described participation or planned action at **113 ports in 22 countries
and regions**. That is an organizer-reported footprint, _not_ an independently audited
count of ports that stopped operating. The International Transport Workers’ Federation
separately described planned activity at more than 100 ports across 17 countries
in its October 28 statement. The two counts reflect different organizer announcements;
neither should be read as a tally of confirmed closures.

## What is happening at the ports?

Associated Press reported on Friday that unions in France, Italy, Greece, Spain,
Turkey and Morocco had coordinated actions opposing arms shipments and the militarization
of ports. The Italian USB union identified Genoa, Trieste, Gioia Tauro and several
other ports for protests, alongside a wider national strike over pay, living costs
and public spending. In France, the CGT ports-and-docks federation called for stoppages
at major terminals including Le Havre and Marseille.

In Greece, the ENEDEP dockworkers’ union called for action at Piraeus. Separately,
a seafarers’ strike over pay and safety disrupted ferry services. Those are related
developments occurring on the same day, but they are not the same labor dispute
and should not be combined into one disruption total.

## Why the large participation figure can mislead

A port listed by organizers might experience a full-day stoppage, a shorter walkout,
a rally, or a solidarity action without a complete shutdown. Participation can also
differ between terminals within the same harbor. Reuters reported ahead of Friday’s
actions that some locations expected limited disruption. As of this reporting cutoff,
there is no independently verified global count of containers delayed, ships immobilized
or freight value lost.

Organizers have circulated projections of possible effects on Mediterranean container
traffic. Such figures describe the scale of trade associated with participating
workers or ports, not the share of shipping actually halted. A forecast of disruption
is not evidence that it has happened.

## Why this matters beyond the political message

Commercial ports connect manufacturers, retailers, food importers and energy suppliers.
Even short stoppages can affect schedules when vessels have narrow berthing windows
or cargo must connect to road and rail services. Delays may be more consequential
for perishable goods and time-sensitive components than for cargo with flexible
delivery dates. But isolated port actions do not automatically translate into widespread
shortages or a sustained increase in consumer prices.

The unions’ demands also extend beyond geopolitics. Their campaign links opposition
to military cargo with concerns about job security, automation, wages and workplace
safety. Those issues can remain active after the October 30 demonstrations end.

## What to watch next

The useful measures are operational: which terminals actually stopped work, for
how long, whether ferry or container schedules were canceled, and how quickly operations
resumed. Shipping-company advisories and port-authority notices can establish the
impact more reliably than a campaign’s headline participation count. This article
will not characterize the action as a global port shutdown without such evidence.
