**Updated October 30, 2026, approximately 06:55 UTC.** Cryptocurrency exchange Binance
says a security incident affected an estimated **$6.3 billion** in digital assets
and that roughly **$3 billion** has been frozen with blockchain partners. It temporarily
suspended deposits and withdrawals while investigating. The two figures describe
different things: the estimated value affected and assets that partners say they
have immobilized. Neither number, by itself, establishes Binance’s final net loss
or how quickly customers will regain full access.

## What Binance has confirmed

In an [October 30 security update](https://www.binance.com/es/support/announcement/detail/c5a8729a97ac486d963784d96c5642d7),
Binance said its initial inquiry points to a potentially compromised laptop belonging
to a DevOps engineer. The exchange says an attacker may have gained access to a
service container and initiated unauthorized withdrawal transactions. Binance said
it has found _no evidence so far_ that wallet private keys leaked. That is a preliminary
finding, not a completed forensic determination.

Binance says it revoked affected address authorization, contacted law enforcement
and blockchain investigators, and will publish a technical post-mortem and updated
proof of reserves after remediation. It also pledged to cover losses using its Secure
Asset Fund for Users (SAFU) and company funds. Those are commitments by the exchange;
an independently audited reconciliation of the full incident and customer impact
is not yet available.

## Why the $3 billion freeze does not equal a $3 billion recovery

Token issuers can block transfers involving some centrally administered digital
assets. A freeze can prevent movement, but it is not automatically a transfer of
money back to Binance, and it does not guarantee that every asset will ultimately
be recovered. Other cryptocurrencies, including bitcoin, cannot be frozen by a token
issuer in the same way. The distinction helps explain why an exchange can report
billions of dollars immobilized while still facing substantial unresolved exposure.

[Blockchain-analysis firm TRM Labs](https://www.trmlabs.com/resources/blog/north-korea-steals-usd-6-36-billion-from-binance-in-the-largest-hack-in-history)
estimates that about $6.36 billion moved out of Binance-linked wallets across ten
blockchains, most within approximately 20 minutes. Its account puts the amount frozen
through multiple organizations at around $2.7 billion as of 00:30 UTC October 30,
using a different measurement cutoff from Binance’s later rounded $3 billion. Such
snapshots should not be added together or presented as conflicting final totals.

## Who carried out the attack?

TRM attributes the operation with high confidence to _TraderTraitor_, a North Korean-
linked hacking group. [Reuters reported the attribution](https://www.reuters.com/legal/government/blockchain-analysis-firm-trm-says-north-korea-behind-binance-crypto-theft-2026-10-30/),
but it remains an assessment by investigators, not a publicly established judicial
finding. Binance has not released a final attribution or full technical report.

Separate [Associated Press reporting](https://apnews.com/article/39cda8ceb8095e036334a18549d3d20d)
likewise notes the gap between an estimated incident impact and Binance’s still-
developing investigation. This matters because early blockchain traces may show
asset movements more clearly than they reveal the attacker’s identity, the exact
entry point or recoverable losses.

## What customers and the wider industry should watch

The immediate operational test is whether Binance restores deposits and withdrawals
safely and explains which networks or services remain restricted. The financial
test is whether the promised coverage can be substantiated with reconciled reserves
and a clear account of frozen, returned and still-missing assets. For other exchanges,
the case underscores the importance of protecting operational credentials, transaction
authorization and recovery processes—not merely safeguarding private keys.

Customers should check only official Binance status and support channels for restoration
notices. Unsolicited recovery messages, requests for passwords or seed phrases,
and lookalike support links are particularly risky during a high-profile incident.
The exchange’s assurance that customer funds are safe should be reported as its
position, not treated as independently verified fact.

**What remains unknown:** the final loss after freezes and any recoveries, a completed
root-cause analysis, the definitive perpetrator and the precise timeline for full
service restoration. Figures and operational status may change as the investigation
progresses.
