**Australia’s central bank has raised its benchmark cash-rate target by a quarter
of a percentage point to 4.85%, putting renewed pressure on borrowers while underscoring
how stubborn inflation can complicate a recovery.**

The [Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA)](https://www.rba.gov.au/news/) announced the
decision on Tuesday, 3 November 2026, after its Monetary Policy Board meeting. The
move is a 25-basis-point increase from 4.60% to 4.85%, not a 4.85-percentage-point
increase. The RBA’s [official media-release index](https://www.rba.gov.au/media-releases/2026/)
lists the decision as release 2026-30. Contemporary coverage of the day’s business
developments also reported the rise.

## Why another quarter-point matters

The cash-rate target is the rate the central bank aims to maintain in the overnight
money market. It is not itself the rate paid on a household mortgage, but it influences
lenders’ funding costs and, ultimately, variable borrowing rates and deposit returns.
Banks determine how much of any change to pass through and when.

For illustration, a 0.25-percentage-point increase amounts to about A$250 a year
in additional simple interest per A$100,000 of outstanding debt if fully passed
through and the balance remains constant. Actual mortgage-payment changes depend
on the loan term, repayment structure and lender pricing; this is not a forecast
of anyone’s monthly bill.

## The trade-off: prices versus growth

Higher interest rates are intended to restrain demand and reduce the risk that price
increases become persistent. But tighter financing also weighs on housing affordability,
household spending and business investment. The decision therefore signals a difficult
balancing act, rather than a declaration that inflation has already been defeated.

The November increase follows a year in which the RBA had already tightened policy
in response to inflation pressure. Its February policy statement cited stronger
private demand, capacity constraints and a relatively tight labour market. Those
earlier observations provide context, but they should not be mistaken for a verbatim
explanation of the November decision.

## What to watch next

Three developments will determine the practical effect: whether commercial lenders
pass on the full increase, whether inflation readings ease in coming months, and
whether household demand slows without a sharp deterioration in employment. A single
rate decision cannot establish the future direction of policy. The RBA’s next published
forecasts and meeting communications will be important tests.
