**AUSTIN, Texas — October 25, 2026 (final result).** Kimi Antonelli converted pole
position into a commanding United States Grand Prix victory, finishing **13.078
seconds** ahead of Charles Leclerc and 17.485 seconds ahead of Max Verstappen. The
Mercedes driver claimed his ninth win of the season, but the 2026 Formula 1 drivers’
championship was **not** decided in Austin: Lewis Hamilton’s fourth place and George
Russell’s eighth kept the title mathematically open.

## Official race highlights: Antonelli’s Austin victory

## How Mercedes won the strategic argument

The defining difference was not simply outright speed. Antonelli started on medium
tyres while several front-running rivals chose softs, held his advantage at the
first corner and built enough breathing room to make a **single pit stop** work.
He changed to hard tyres at the end of lap 24 and managed that set to the finish.
Verstappen and Leclerc used two-stop approaches, leaving them with more tyre flexibility
but the additional cost of another trip through the pits.

That created a revealing contrast. The Ferrari and Red Bull could attack on fresher
rubber late in the race, but Antonelli had already banked track position and time.
Even a late Virtual Safety Car after Valtteri Bottas stopped could not overturn
the margin. This was a victory in execution as much as pace: Mercedes committed
to the longer second stint and its driver delivered the consistency the plan required.

## Leclerc’s late pass reshapes the podium

Leclerc overtook Verstappen late to claim second, while Hamilton followed in fourth.
The Ferrari result mattered for more than the podium: Hamilton’s position was one
of the results that prevented Antonelli from clinching the championship in Texas.
Lando Norris completed the top five, with Isack Hadjar sixth, Oscar Piastri seventh
and Russell eighth after a five-second penalty for leaving the track and gaining
an advantage.

## Why the title is close — but not settled

Antonelli left Austin **123 points ahead of Russell** and **124 ahead of Hamilton**,
with a maximum of 125 still available. That makes the Mexico City Grand Prix on
November 1 the next major checkpoint. As Sky Sports calculates, a top-nine finish
in Mexico would guarantee Antonelli the crown regardless of his closest challengers.
Until the required points are secured, however, describing him as the 2026 world
champion would be premature.

The wider lesson of Austin is that even in an era of closely matched front-running
cars, a well-timed tyre decision can turn a pole into a controlled win. Mercedes
did not need to win every lap on raw speed; it needed a strategy that made its pace
sustainable across the full distance.
