**PARIS, November 2, 2026 —** French rail manufacturer Alstom has sharply reduced
its financial outlook after problems with the Coradia Max train platform and other
German-related projects disrupted production, certification and contract economics.
The scale of the revision makes this more than a routine earnings miss: it raises
questions about delivery schedules and how quickly a large order book can be converted
into profitable trains.

## The figures behind the warning

In its [November 2 preliminary results statement](https://www.globenewswire.com/news-release/2026/11/02/3392830/0/en/alstom-s-a-alstom-s-preliminary-first-half-2026-27-results-fy-2026-27-outlook-adjusted-amid-selected-execution-issues-in-europe-operational-plans-to-be-paired-with-deleveraging.html),
Alstom cut its expected adjusted EBIT margin for fiscal 2026/27 to **around 1%**,
from approximately **6.5%**. Its full-year free-cash-flow forecast switched from
positive to an **outflow of about €1.5 billion**. The company also reduced expected
rail-car production to roughly 4,000 from 4,400–4,500.

The first-half numbers show the severity of the disruption. Sales rose 3% to €9.3
billion and orders increased to €11 billion, but the adjusted operating margin was
approximately **negative 4%**, compared with positive 6.4% a year earlier. Alstom
reported free-cash-flow consumption of €1.248 billion for the half year and said
these preliminary figures were unaudited.

## Why Coradia Max matters

The central problem is not a lack of demand for trains. Alstom says additional technical
issues and testing requirements on the Coradia Max platform extended the approval
process, interrupted manufacturing and created further work on contracts. Production
of rail cars fell to 1,860 in the half year, versus 2,017 a year earlier. Delays
also affect when the company can reach payment milestones and collect cash.

That distinction matters for customers as well as shareholders. A contract can remain
in the order book while certification and delivery slip. For public transport authorities,
a delayed train may require interim capacity planning; for a manufacturer, it can
mean higher costs, lower contract margins and deferred receipts. Those are general
implications, not evidence that every Alstom customer faces the same delay.

[Reuters](https://www.reuters.com/business/alstom-slashes-annual-margin-target-sees-15-billion-cash-burn-2026-11-02/)
reported a sharp share-price fall following the warning. The [Financial Times](https://www.ft.com/content/95723b31-c35b-4d68-9abe-9e082e95e362)
separately reported that the problems were concentrated in German Coradia Max contracts
and described the market reaction. Share-price percentages can change during the
session and should not be treated as a closing result.

## What management is promising — and what remains uncertain

Alstom says it is tightening project oversight, engineering coordination and procurement
discipline. It also announced a deleveraging objective of approximately €2 billion
and plans to review its organizational and operating model before early 2027. Its
updated guidance implies a major recovery in the second half of the fiscal year,
which is an ambition rather than an accomplished turnaround.

Investors and transit customers should watch the next certification milestones,
the pace of deliveries, whether cash consumption improves and whether the company
has identified all material project risks. Strong new orders do not automatically
offset the cost of delayed or loss-making contracts.
