October 30, 2026 — Reddit’s shares fell about 29% on Friday after the company warned that fewer people are reaching its discussions through search. The sell-off points to a problem extending well beyond one social platform: as search engines answer questions directly, publishers can remain visible in search while receiving fewer visits.

A sharp market reaction to a profitable quarter

The contrast in Reddit’s latest results is striking. For the quarter ended September 30, the company reported $895 million in revenue, up 53% from a year earlier, and $283 million in net income. Daily active unique users rose 12% year over year to 130.3 million. Those figures, disclosed in Reddit’s October 29 earnings release, show that the business was still growing over the full quarter.

But investors were looking ahead. According to Reuters’ October 30 reporting, management said search referrals declined by more than one million visits per week on average in October. Reddit warned that, if the trend persisted, fourth-quarter daily active unique visitors could decline by a low-double-digit percentage. That is a conditional outlook, not a confirmed quarterly result.

Why Google’s AI answers are under scrutiny

Chief executive Steve Huffman has pointed to Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode as an important explanation for weaker referral traffic. AI-generated answers can satisfy a user’s immediate question before that person opens the source page. The Verge reported that Huffman also discussed changes affecting the ranking of translated Reddit content. These are management’s explanations; the available disclosures do not isolate how much of the referral decline is attributable to each factor.

The distinction matters. Fewer clicks do not necessarily mean fewer people want the information. They can also reflect changes in how a search engine displays and summarizes it. Equally, a drop in referrals is not proof that every publisher is experiencing the same decline. Different audiences, search queries and direct-visit habits can produce very different outcomes.

What the numbers do — and do not — establish

Reddit’s 130.3 million daily active unique users were a third-quarter average, while the reported referral deterioration accelerated in October. Comparing those figures without acknowledging their different time periods would be misleading. The 29% share-price decline reflects investors’ expectations for future engagement and earnings, not a 29% fall in users or revenue.

There was also a wider technology sell-off. Reuters reported that the Nasdaq Composite fell 2.86% on Friday as investors questioned the financial returns on massive AI investment. That broader market weakness complicates any attempt to attribute Reddit’s entire stock move to one product change at Google.

The broader test for digital publishers

For news organizations and specialist websites, the practical lesson is to distinguish search visibility from audience relationships. Rankings and search impressions are useful, but they do not replace measurements of actual referral sessions, returning visitors, newsletter subscriptions and reader engagement. A publisher relying heavily on a single search channel has greater exposure when the presentation of search results changes.

Building useful original reporting, clear source attribution and a recognizable editorial identity may encourage people to return directly. Email newsletters and genuinely relevant social distribution can provide additional routes to readers, but none guarantees growth. Their effectiveness must be measured against real audience data rather than assumed from platform trends.

Reddit says it is exploring ways to strengthen direct participation and logged-in usage. Whether those measures offset search-related losses remains to be seen. Its experience offers an early warning about a fundamental shift in digital distribution: being used as an information source and being visited by the reader are no longer the same thing.
