Milan Reinforces Streets With 500 Soldiers as Fresh Protests Test Italy’s Security Crackdown

MILAN, Italy — October 24, 2026. Italian authorities have reinforced security in Milan with 500 additional soldiers as the city braces for another round of demonstrations following violent unrest and looting last weekend. The deployment comes amid protests across several European countries over living costs, housing and public services.
The reinforcements are paratroopers from the Folgore brigade assigned to the Strade Sicure security operation. They join approximately 800 military personnel already deployed in Milan, according to Sky TG24’s October 24 report. The soldiers can patrol and support security operations but do not have the same judicial-police powers as officers, a distinction that has prompted debate within Italy’s government.
Authorities are also planning heightened police patrols, surveillance and restrictions around sensitive parts of the city. Euronews reported on October 23 that police would use drones to monitor demonstrations and that some central areas would be off limits to rallies. Security preparations followed clashes in Milan on October 17–18, when shops were damaged and police confronted groups of young people.
Government crackdown draws scrutiny
Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s government approved an emergency public-security and juvenile-crime decree on October 20. The official cabinet communiqué outlines tougher measures concerning public disorder and offenses involving minors. The legislation has prompted questions about how Italy can protect public safety while preserving the right to peaceful assembly.
According to Associated Press reporting published October 24, Milan’s heightened security is part of a wider response to demonstrations in Italy and elsewhere in Europe. Protests in different countries have distinct political demands; they should not be treated as a single coordinated movement.
What remains uncertain: The scale of Saturday’s turnout and whether any further clashes will occur cannot yet be established. The extra troop deployment should not be taken as evidence that the planned demonstrations themselves are violent.
