BERCHTESGADEN, Germany — October 24, 2026. A fire has left the Kehlsteinhaus, the Nazi-era mountain building widely known as the “Eagle’s Nest,” largely destroyed in the Bavarian Alps. Police have detained a person as investigators examine whether the blaze was deliberately set, but authorities have not established that the detainee caused the fire.
According to the Upper Bavaria South police statement carried by Presse Augsburg, an alarm was raised at around 9:15 p.m. on Friday, October 23. Emergency crews found the building engulfed in flames after navigating a difficult mountain approach at an altitude of approximately 1,834 metres (6,017 feet).
About 200 firefighters and other emergency responders were mobilized. No one was believed to have been inside when the blaze began, and no injuries had been reported as of Saturday morning, according to the Associated Press and Reuters. Police investigators in Traunstein are examining the cause; suspicion of arson is not a confirmed finding.
The remote location hampered firefighting. A local report citing police updates at 11:15 a.m. Saturday said extinguishing work was continuing, a drone no-fly zone had been established and hikers were urged to avoid the area.
Completed in 1938, the Kehlsteinhaus was built as a Nazi-era reception and guest building. It was distinct from Adolf Hitler’s nearby Berghof residence, and Hitler visited it infrequently. After the war it became a mountain restaurant and historical visitor site. The extent of any surviving structure and plans for the protected site remain uncertain.
