SEOUL / DANDONG, October 24, 2026 — North Korean leader Kim Jong Un reportedly entered China on Saturday through the newly opened New Yalu River Bridge, a rare cross-border visit that puts a recently reopened trade route at the center of diplomacy between Beijing and Pyongyang.

South Korea’s Yonhap News Agency said a South Korean government source told it Kim had arrived in Dandong, the Chinese border city opposite Sinuiju. Reuters and the Associated Press also reported the visit. The accounts relied on South Korean reporting and officials; Chinese and North Korean authorities had not independently confirmed the visit in the initial reports.

Why the crossing matters

The route itself is a significant part of the story. China and North Korea inaugurated the approximately three-kilometer New Yalu River Bridge on October 15, more than a decade after its construction was completed. The crossing links Dandong with Sinuiju and is intended to ease trade and passenger movement alongside the older Sino-Korean Friendship Bridge.

At the opening, Chinese and North Korean officials emphasized closer economic cooperation. Yonhap’s October 15 report said the bridge had remained unused for years while connecting infrastructure on the North Korean side was unfinished. A leader’s reported use of the crossing days after it opened gives the infrastructure diplomatic symbolism, but does not by itself establish that trade volumes will rise.

A relationship being rebuilt

Kim’s reported journey follows renewed high-level exchanges with Beijing. Chinese President Xi Jinping visited North Korea in June, while Kim had previously traveled to China in September 2025. Pyongyang has also deepened military cooperation with Russia, giving its relationship with China renewed regional significance.

Saturday’s reports did not establish whether Kim would meet Xi, how long he would remain in China, or what agreements might result. Any claims about a summit or new trade concessions should await official confirmation.

What to watch next

The immediate questions are whether Chinese or North Korean state media confirm the itinerary, whether senior officials hold talks, and whether the newly opened bridge begins carrying sustained commercial traffic. Those developments would help distinguish a symbolic border visit from a broader change in economic relations.
