AMMAN, Jordan — October 24, 2026. Jordan has stepped up security at shopping centres, diplomatic missions and other sensitive locations after gunmen opened fire on mourners at a Greek Orthodox church in Karak governorate on Friday. Officials initially reported seven deaths; Jordan’s official Petra news agency confirmed an eighth death on October 24 after a critically injured patient died in hospital. The attack has prompted a nationwide period of mourning and an ongoing hunt for those responsible. Later October 24 reports from Reuters and the Associated Press put the death toll at nine, following Petra’s earlier confirmation of eight.

What authorities have confirmed

The shooting took place during a funeral at the church in Humud, a village in southern Jordan’s Karak governorate. Jordan’s Public Security Directorate initially reported seven deaths on Friday, before the toll rose to eight on Saturday. At a Friday evening briefing, the police chief reported 34 wounded; subsequent reports from The Associated Press and Reuters put the injured toll at 40. These figures reflect different reporting times rather than a confirmed new incident.

Interior Minister Mazen al-Faraya described the shooting as an extremist attack. As of the latest official briefings cited here, authorities had not established a confirmed link to a particular organisation or announced a completed arrest operation. The attackers’ affiliation and full motive therefore remain unconfirmed.

What changed on Saturday

Updated October 24: The director of Prince Ali Military Hospital in Karak confirmed through Petra that one of two critically injured patients had died, bringing the confirmed toll to eight at that stage. Reuters subsequently reported nine deaths and 40 wounded on October 24, a toll also reported by the Associated Press. The later figure has not yet been independently matched here to a newer Petra bulletin. More than two dozen people remained hospitalized, according to AP’s October 24 reporting.

On October 24, Reuters reported that Jordan had increased security around malls, foreign embassies and other public sites. The additional precautions reflect the seriousness of the attack, but officials have not publicly established that another attack is imminent.

Jordan’s government also declared three days of national mourning beginning Friday, October 23, with flags lowered at public institutions. King Abdullah II visited Karak and pledged to pursue those responsible. Jordan’s official news agency Petra confirmed the mourning declaration.

Why the attack matters

The attack targeted mourners inside a place of worship, heightening concern about civilian safety and Jordan’s long-standing Muslim-Christian coexistence. Jordan is an important regional security partner, and a deadly attack on its Christian minority carries social as well as security consequences. Political and religious leaders have urged solidarity and cautioned against sectarian division.

The United Nations secretary-general condemned the attack, calling for accountability. The most immediate unanswered questions concern the attackers’ identities, whether they had organisational support, and whether investigators identify any broader threat. Those points require evidence, not speculation.
