A cargo vessel sank off Romania’s Black Sea coast on Friday, leaving one sailor dead and three missing as rescue crews searched rough waters near the port of Constanta, according to Romanian authorities and reports by Reuters and the Associated Press.
The Comoros-flagged Khoryv carried 13 crew members from Ukraine and Azerbaijan. Romania’s naval authority said the ship issued a distress signal about 13 nautical miles from Constanta, just beyond Romania’s territorial waters. Nine sailors survived, one body was recovered and three people remained unaccounted for, Reuters reported.
Romanian President Nicușor Dan said the vessel had been struck by a drone and accused Russia of escalating attacks connected to its war in Ukraine. That attribution is a statement by Romania’s president, not an independently established finding about the weapon’s origin or who launched it. The Associated Press reported that Romanian naval authorities had not confirmed the cause of the fire and sinking at the time of its report.
Bad weather and poor visibility complicated the search. The Associated Press reported that conditions prevented authorities from deploying a rescue helicopter.
The incident comes amid growing concern for commercial shipping near Romania and Bulgaria. Several vessels have been hit in recent weeks, and NATO has announced additional Black Sea surveillance measures. The area is important for Ukrainian exports moving through Danube ports and the Sulina Canal.
What remains uncertain: The precise cause of the ship’s initial damage, the origin of any drone involved and the fate of the three missing crew members. Casualty and rescue figures may change as the search continues.
